Ring Insurance

I'm just wondering who everyone has their engagement rings insured with? I need to get mine insured and I just have no idea what company to use. I don't have homeowner's or renter's insurance so I have to use an outside company. Any suggestions?

Re: Ring Insurance

  • I am with Erie. It is 10$ per thousand dollars of the apprasil price. It is more expensive to insure one that is appraised at 1000 or less.
  • A lot of women on here have recommended Jeweler's Mutual, so that's what my FI and I went with.

  • Right now mine's through State Farm.  My annual premium is under $10 per $1000 that my rings are worth, and I have a $100 deductible.  In my experience, price for coverage is going to be about the same across the board, but here are some things I learned by talking to my agent and from the girls on the boards:1)  Make sure the policy for your e-ring is in your name, not your FI's.  My previous agent told me that because the e-ring is a gift to you, and belongs to you, it has to be insured by you.  You can't insure something that isn't yours.  Once you are married, it doesn't matter who holds the policy (although this rule may vary by state, so ask your agent.  For us it doesn't matter b/c our insurance is now a joint policy).2)  I know you don't have homeowners/renter's insurance now, but if you ever do, don't just have the ring added on to that policy, it needs to be separate (although it can be with the same company so that you can get multi-policy discounts).  A girl on P&E whose mom is an agent said that if your ring is on your homeowners policy, and something happens to your house and the ring in the same year, your claim may be denied because sometimes there are limits on how many claims you can make. I also figure that it's important that your ring be covered whether something happens to it while you're at home or elsewhere.3)  Make sure you check the appraisal requirements.  I have friends who have to get their ring re-appraised every 6 months per their policy.  Personally, I want my ring insured for more than it's worth, that way, if it's value goes up and something happens, I'll still be able to get a comparable ring with the insurance proceeds.HTH.
  • We bought mine at Kay's, so that's where my rings are insured. I just have to get it checked every six months to keep the insurance up.

  • goheels05~thank you for the good advice! and ladies, thank you for sharing! i now have some ideas of companies to check out. i feel like i'm really behind because i've been engaged a year now and my ring still isn't insured and according to the knot checklist i'm like way overdue on getting it insured. i would be totally devastated if anything happened to my ring because my FI designed it himself.

  • I'm not help because mine is through my renter's insurance.
  • My ring is insured through State Farm. Since you don't currently have homeowner's/renter's insurance, I also wanted to add that this might be a good time to get it. A friend of mine recently had all of her wedding presents sent to her apartment and when she and her new husband returned from their honeymoon, they walked in the door to find that a pipe had burst in the apartment above theirs while they were gone and not only were most of their belongings damaged, but many of their new gifts were destroyed as well. My advice would be to get yourself a homeowner's/renter's insurance policy since you are already looking around to insure your ring. Better safe than sorry!
  • Mine is also insured through State Farm. I do have my homeowner's and auto with SF, but my ring (and my macbook, for that matter) have their own separate policies, called a personal articles policy. the $10 per $1K is about right, for an annual payment. i whole-heartedly agree with the commenters above about insuring your home. there are so many unexpected perils that could place your belongings at risk, in addition to the fact that your auto insurance will not extend to cover contents in the event of a loss (i.e., your car is broken into and your purse, camera and iPod are stolen. auto ins covers only the damage to the car, so you'll have to file a homeowner's/renter's claim to take care of those items.) you can find an agent in your area by entering your zip code at this site: www.statefarm.com Good luck!
