Just Engaged and Proposals

Ring too big!

I need some opinions.  My FI and I got engaged about a month ago, and have already had the ring resized once.  It still doesn't fit right 100% of the time (my knuckles are only very slightly larger than where the ring should sit).  It's a cold spring right now, so I don't want to get it resized again until the summer to avoid it fitting the "cold size" but being to small for the "warm size".

So my question for all of you: what kind of ring guard should I go for?  I've seen a few, and previously I had been against ring guards because they looked "tacky" to me.  I am realizing now that it may not be an option to go without one.  I've heard that metal ones can scratch a ring if not put on properly, but how reliable are the plastic ones?

The ring is yellow gold.

  • I had the same problem--I got sized int he summer and was an 8.5 and then in winter I was a 7.5 so we agreed he should get me an 8, and I've not lost 20 pounds so now it's huge but I dont want to resize before the summer so I took grey thread which blends with the ring and just put it around the bottom of the ring. it's grey so no one notices or sees it and it definitely wont scratch the ring...its working liek a charm! (and it's fine if it gets wet too!)

[QUOTE]What type of metal is the ring? If it's gold, then scratching might be a problem. If you have a platinum ring, I would say go for the metal guards, because it's unlikely to scratch.

Actually, platinum scratches very easily. My platinum ring unfortunately has a lot of scratches on it.

When I first got my ring it was too small and I ended up losing a lot of weight so that it was too big. I went and got a ring snuggie and it bothered me personally so I went to the jewlery store and they but a ring guard on it. I have a white gold ring and haven't had any scratching issues with it. It was also easy to move the bar up and down depending on what was comfortable. Just depends on what you are comfortable with.
  • I had shots added to my ring (they are two little bumps in the bottom inside of the ring that keep it from turning, and make it slightly smaller). If my hand swells up too much in warmer months, they are easier to remove than resizing the ring. Plus, it's not a whole size smaller, so it gives more room for swelling while still keeping the ring on my finger. They felt weirdly uncomfortable at first, but after a week or so, I didn't notice them at all. I think they're called sizing beads, but Tiffany's referred to them as shots and it took less than an hour.
