April 2013 date - too soon to look at venues?

I know most venues book up to a year in advance, so I feel like we should start looking and narrowing down from my list of ten faves. My mother, however, says we don't need to look yet, but even though we don't have money for a deposit, I feel like I at least need a venue picked out before I decide colors.

Thoughts?

It doesn't hurt to start looking and getting quotes.  It's also a great way to negotiate with venues on prices and services when you're ready to decide.

It's definitely not too early! My wedding is going to be in July 2013 and we picked out a place a few months ago. It's not paid for yet, because we're still working on getting the money, but we'll have the down payment within the next few weeks, so we can have our date booked. You don't wan to miss a chance to have it at the place you want just because you waited too long! It's never too early to pick a place as long as you have your finacials and everything in order. We already have a budget and a tentative guest list - our friends and my family is HUGE (150+) and his family is tiny - FMIL has told me max 30 or 40. So I'm not looking at venues that have a capacity of less than 200.

There are two venues that I'm completely in love with that have a max of 120 people, but if they knock my socks off, we may have to make some cuts.

I am getting married in June of 2013 and already have my reception venue and church booked, The sooner the better that way you make sure you have the date you want

Start looking at venues.  We booked ours at 18 months out it it was the only Saturday in March left.  Tell your mom good venues book up fast.

I heard that there are some dates that are booked a long time in advance.. I think venue and photo should be booked asap

I dont think its early at all! We booked our December 2013 wedding this past sept. We knew exactly what we wanted so we didnt want to risk losing our date!

I got engaged on 12/21 and have started looking at venues for summer 2013 and many of them have already started booking for then! So I would say it is definitely not too early!!
