Allergic To My Ring :(

Hi Everyone!

So, I got engaged to the man of my dreams on Dec. 22nd, and I've been wearing my beautiful ring ever since!  Yesterday I noticed my finger was blistering under the band.  I have terrible metal allergies, can't wear necklaces either...I wear white gold earrings all the time and it doesn't seem to bother my ears, but anywhere else seems to be a problem....even if it's just the metal buttons on my jeans!

I was really hoping since the white gold earrings don't bug me, and also I wear a white gold ring on my right hand that only aggrivates me sometimes, that an e-ring wouldn't be a problem...but alas the irritating itchy blisters have reared their ugly face.  I'm so worried, I want to wear the ring, I LOVE it and want to show it off, but I don't think I can.  I don't want to hurt my finance's feelings either...he can sometimes be sensative as we all can....Any advice?  I feel sad!

  • Oh yes, and Happy New Year to you all!  2012 is going to be one fantastic year :)

  • It may be the rhodium plating on the ring that you're allergic too.  I've heard some people coat the inside of their rings with clear nail polish and it helps prevent blisters.

  • Yes, I've heard that too....I do a lot of community theatre as well, and for one show the costume ladies went to great measures to match up all the jewelery with my costumes...and I couldn't wear any of it!!  Clip on earrings, rings, necklaces...They painted them all with clear nail polish and it still made me blister :(  I don't want to go and gunk up my e-ring knowing it likely won't work.  *sigh*  I'm so bummed out over this!

Maybe talk to your jeweler and see if they have a solution.  If you other ring doesn't really bother you then maybe wait until the weather change.  I am also sensitive to jewelry so I feel your pain.  In the winter my ring tends to irritate the heck out of me.  I don't wear it when I sleep to give my finger a break and I take it off when I shower or wash my hands because water under the rings causes the irritation to flare up quicker.

  • If it's an allergic reaction that you can't control, I would think your fiance would be understanding.  It's not like you're saying you don't like his choice.
  • Oh he is understanding :)  I think he worries that I wanted a bigger stone or platinum...both of which he couldn't afford!  I love my ring and I couldn't ask for anything better!  I talked to him this morning and I think we're going to see the jeweler who made the ring (he is FANTASTIC) and see if he has any solutions...and possibly give us a quote to switch from white gold to platinum, I've read that platinum is hypo-allergetic?

Thank you everyone for the tips!  I will be more concious about not getting my finger wet while it's on...come to think of it I haven't been up to this point...I have been taking it off when I sleep just because I'm paranoid I'll do something dumb while I'm sleeping and lose it. I just love it and I've been staring at my hand  since the 22nd and just feeling disappointed this morning.

  • Palladium would be a budget friendly solution, though it has some design limitations. Talk to your jeweler - hopefully they have some solutions! Maybe a more simple design in platinum? Better a ring you can wear than oney ou can't!

  • Another option is the good old fashioned around the neck. It will at least hold you over until you can figure out a more permanent solution.
  • My ring is just a classic band and solitaire, nothing too fancy or complicated but absolutely perfect for me so maybe platinum might be an option.

I can't even wear necklaces for more than one or two hours without breaking out in a itchy unsightly rash!  ...........

    I'm a mess!  Cry

  • I would talk to your jeweler to get some options.

I too can't wear some metal....white gold in particular or anything that has nickel in it.  Talk to a jeweler....not just someone who sells the rings ,they may have a suggestion.  I know some eople who wear titanium because it usually does not cause a reaction....good luck in finding a solution.....
  • Congrats and welcome! Ditto about talking to your jeweler. Hope it works out
  • I'm allergic to nickel too.  We didn't confirm it until the rhodium plating on my mother's engagement ring that she had given me wore down.  I second requesting palladium or a palladium/gold alloy from your jeweler as a budget-friendly alternative.

  • We are getting wooden bands but they sell absolutely beautfiul wooden engagement rings.Check those out!
  • Sounds like a nickel allergy. I'm sure your fiancé will understand it's a health problem and it's not that you don't like it. Look into getting a platinum or palladium (more affordable) band.

  • Well, after reading everyones suggestions (thank you all so much) I started being careful when washing my hands to make sure everything was nice and dry, and it worked!!!! For a week and a half....and now it's flared up worse than ever.  My fiance is great about it, he wants me to be able to wear and enjoy my ring so I'm on my way to see my jeweler tonight to see what can be done.  I just wish I was normal....HA!

    Thanks everyone :)
