Just Engaged and Proposals

Torn between two rings help!!

Ok so my fiance proposed  few weeks ago.  I loved the ring he chose (in the picture below it is the bottom ring) but I wanted to look at other options.  He got the ring from Zale's celebration collection and I felt he paid too much for it.  So we went to Jareds to look at other options and I found ring number two (top ring).  They are both one carrot but the band on the bottom ring (from Zales) is platinum and 18 carot gold.  The one from Jares is only 14 carot but it was about $1500 cheaper!  Now I'm torn between the two and I'm unsure of which to keep.  I need opinions please!!  Which do you all like better? Thank you so much!!!

  • I'd want something with platinum because I wouldn't want to have to eventually replate it. I wash my hands too much at work to have anything white gold. Your job may be different though.

  • Thank you for your replies!  LucyHC, no neither come with coordinating bands ;(
  • I like the bottom one more. The top one looks like too much to me, takes away from the diamond.

  • wait.. I don't understand why it's Platinum AND Gold?
I don't like the top ring at all, but I have a princess cut diamond on a platinum band because I'm a plain Jane :] hahaha...

  • I like the top one best. That being said, I would wear the ring as engagement/wedding and not add a band to it. I think its beautiful just the way it is and if you add anything else to it, it wouldnt look right.

  • Ditto everything LC said. I prefer the top one, but I think it'll be harder to match a wedding band to it.

  • I agree with FTL on this one.  The top ring is beautiful, don't get me wrong, but you are going to have a difficult time getting a matching wedding band.

I have a solitare similar to yours (or the bottom one, anyway), and it leaves lots of options open for a wedding ring, including the possibility of using an enhancer as a wedding band to create a custom look.

It depends on what you want, I guess.  Both are beautiful, your FI did a good job. :)

  • Bigrout & TLC, do you guys have pics of  your rings paired with the wedding band?  I would like to get an idea of how it would look with the band.. thanks!
  • I would pick the top one only if you could find a matching wedding band, but if not I would go with the bottom one.

    Both are gorgeous!

  • Personally I would go with the bottom one, it's more time-tested-classic design, and as other have pointed out, it much easier to pair a band with.

Also the fact that FH picked it out, I think that would be the sentimental kicker.
  • The bottom one for sure!! Hands down. You can get a killer band with that ring. And further down the road you can get a second band on the other side. I would definitely stick with the one you originally got. Timeless, classic, beautiful.
  • I like the top one. My FH had my ring picked out originally at a custom place but it wasn't in the price range. He got a photo and showed the ring to other places do a quote. I think he went to four jewelry places. From Zales. :)

  • Definitely the bottom one. The top one is kind of gaudy I think.

    Life is good today.
  • The bottom one is best. I see way too many rings these days that are just way too much... the bottom one is very classic. Not only the, your FI picked out the bottom one, which is worth more than you can put a dollar amount on. The top one is more fancy and too much, but the bottom one is better quality. And you can jazz it up with a wedding band if you feel the need to.
  • The picture isn't so clear...it's hard to tell...To get what YOU want and save you money, why don't you just design your own ring? Both JAREDS and other jewelers like KAY have very great Desgin your own features. You can build the ring you like and adjust your selections according to your budget.

For example, you could choose your perfect setting (like platinum) and then pick a diamond according to how much money you have left. YOu can choose a diamond within your budget.

With a ready-made ring, you have no control about changing the parameters to work with your budget.
