Name Change Help

Hey Ladies -I know this has been asked before, but I wasn't able to find it in the search.  I'm having a heck of a time trying to figure out how to change my name.  I've checked the websites for the DMV and SSA; however, I can't seem to find what I'm looking for.  Which do you do first? I know last time this was asked, there were different opinions, but does it even matter the order?  Driver's license or SS Card first?Also, when going to the DMV, do you need a certified copy of the marriage certificate, or will the original work? I feel so lost. Help?!

for me, it didn't matter what i did first. i printed off the form on the SS site and went there with my old card and ML. they send you a new one. the next day i went to the BMV with same ML (actual one) and they made a copy of it and then processed my new ID. i don't think i had any form or anything from the SS office confirming my SS card but I DID still have my old SS card. Then I called all the credit card companies. Only one made me send them a notarized copy of my ML.   HTH!

I'm not sure what is the "right" way, but I went to the SS office first and you just fill out your paperwork and they send you a new card in 2 weeks.  I took both the marriage liscense and marriage certificate and honestly, I don't even know which one they used.  Then I went to the DMV when I got my new SS card, but they didn't even need it so it was pointless that I waited so long!  I took toe original liscense & certificate to them as well.  I'm sure a notarized copy would work just fine though.

So if we're taking our honeymoon one week after the wedding, can I go ahead to the SSA to submit that paperwork since it will take a while and I will still have my old SSC, and then when I get back from the honeymoon I can go change my DL right away?  I was going to wait until we got back from the HM to do anything because all the tickets are in my maiden name of course, but since I can change my SSC without my new DL do you think this is a good idea? I hate the thought of waiting weeks to change my name.

I have no idea, haha.  I know that I was told not to change anything until we returned from the HM; however, I don't know if doing what you're asking would have affected anything.

i would keep all tickets in maiden name, not change your DL until all tickets in maiden name are redeemed as is. the SS card you could go get done since you dont' use that as a form of ID associated with tickets, i would GUESS.

My new SSC came in like a week, I was shocked.  But as PP have said, you don't need that for anything name change related, as soon as you change it on your DL it's official, and enough for the banks, etc....
