How to tell the family?

What's a good way to tell family about the engagement. There are so many people that would want to know and I seriously don't feel like calling every single one of them.

I took a picture of my ring and texted it to everyone I wanted to know immeadiately, and our parents took over telling extended family...

Calling or in person is the only proper way for close family & friends. For the "just" family & others facebook/family gossip is fine.
