Choosing right ring size

Hi all,

My fiance and I are looking at rings and I think we have picked the one!  I've been measured for size at several of the stores we've shopped at and have gotten a couple different outcomes.  Sometimes they say size 6.5, and sometimes they say 6.  The jeweler we are probably buying from said 6 and that the ring should fit snugly to prevent loss from falling off and to prevent damage from it spinning around to the inside of the hand and being knocked around.

To test size, I bought an inexpensive but similar width size 6 fashion ring to try out and have been wearing it for a few days, and a lot of the time (mornings especially) I feel like it is just way too tight.  Sometimes it feels like it wouldn't be able to take it off or put it on, and I feel like my finger looks like a sausage with a pinched casing.   But sometimes it seems OK.  Snugger than what I'm used to, but still OK, and definitely safe from falling off!

I don't have a 6.5 size to try, and half sizes are hard to find in cheap jewerly, so I haven't been able to test it out.

The only rings I've ever worn with any regularity (mostly cheap fashion rings) have been size 7, and they fit pretty loosely, but I've never lost one.  They are comfortable, but I notice that they can spin around too much.

My e- ring can, of course, be resized if needed, but I'd prefer to get it right the first time if possible.

Any thoughts?

Re: Choosing right ring size

  • When you choose a jeweler and style ring, have that jeweler size you because he will be the one making the ring. The sizes should be consistant at any particular store. Choose what is most comfortable with out risk of falling off. Also, the littlle balls that they put on the back inside of the ring can prevent spinning. Talk to the person making or sizing your ring.
  • Depending where you are at it could also be the weather. I know in the summer my fingers swell up a bit, but in the winter my rings look perfect. It all kind of depends for me.

Maybe see if you notice a change from sitting inside or going outside.
  • You want it to fit where it won't cut off your circulation when it's hot & muggy but it won't go flying away in cold, dry weather. Shop on a "neutral" kind of day if you can (might be hard to do in summer, depending on where you live!)- I held off getting my wedding band sized on Monday this week because it was 95 degrees here, super hot for us. The next day was normal, mid-70s, much better. The shape of the band can make a difference too- whether it's a comfort type band, for example. And the size of your knuckles vs your fingers makes a difference too. My fiance's knuckles are on the bigger side, so his band is just going to be a bit loose, but it still has to be tugged a bit to get over the knuckle, so having it a bit loose on the finger can be ok if it won't go over the knuckle w/out a serious tug. You may well be a quarter size. Most rings (non-eternity bands anyway) can be sized within a decent range, so if you end up with a 6.5 and realize you're a 6 3/4 or 6 1/4, it'd be easy enough to fix.

  • I find that my ring set fits very differently in August (when it's hot and sticky) than it does in January (when it's cool and dry).  Depending how soon your fiance to be is planning to get your ring, perhaps you could get sized again in a few months and see if there's a difference and pick a happy medium.  Part of it is personal preference of how snugly you like your ring to fit and what feels comfortable to you.  It sounds like might be happy with size 6.5 where it won't spin but also won't cut off your circulation!

I also found that my engagement ring needed to be a half size up once I wore it with the wedding band because it was a lot thicker when the two rings were put together, but this isn't a problem for everyone.  Even if you'd rather not deal with it, it's not the end of the world if you do end up needing to get it resized.  Just hold off if you want to have your engagement ring engraved until you have a chance to wear your ring for a while and try it with the wedding band if you're going to have a set.
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • My e-ring is slightly large for my finger.   When I had my finger sized, the jeweler sized it to where the e-ring would be sitting with the wedding band.

  • I'm also a quarter size, so I'd check that out. I agree with PP that you definitely don't want your hand to feel like a sausage in the ring for half the year so you might want to get it a little bigger just so that it'll fit. My e-ring was bought as an antique and then we moved and it took us a while to find a jeweler and it turned out it was .75 larger than my ring size. I wore it for 6 months without sizing it and it still stayed on my finger.

I agree with PPs and wanted to share that my ring fit perfectly in the summer but just about flew off my hand in the winter. The sizing balls mentioned above are perfect and you don't even feel them. They keep the ring from going over your knuckle or spinning. Another suggestion (and a lot of women do this) - don't sleep with your e-ring on. Naturally our bodies swell when we sleep so that's why the size 6 is probably so tight each morning.
