[QUOTE]We dated for about 8 months before we moved in together, and started talking marriage around the same time.  Then I got sick (was diagnosed with melanoma), and we put marriage plans on the back burner while we focused on me getting healthy and paying off the isht-ton of medical bills I piled up, and he proposed shortly after our 4 year anniversary.  We just got married 2 months shy of our 5 year anniversary (which is 2 weeks from today!)

I hope you're healthy and happy now! Congrats on your marriage. :)
  • We were together for 4 years before he proposed (:

  • We had been dating almost 15 months when he proposed, and we're getting married right around the two-year mark!

  • We were together a year and 4 months before he formally proposed. He had proposed once without a ring at a fireworks show and then again in front of my entire church (with a ring this time!!) I've been engaged since Dec. '11 and the wedding is set for whenever college is over with. Which will be probably another two years away.

  • Six years. We started dating our senior year of high school. We'll be together 8.5 before we get married.

  • We got engaged just before we'd been together 7 months. We'd been living together for 5 months at that point. We will be getting married just after our 1 year anniversary.

I always thought people were full of it when they said that "they just knew". But after meeting him I can understand it.

  • Together for 2 years, then long distance for 1.5 years, and right before he moved back (and in with me) he proposed, so total of 3.5 years.
7 month engagements means we'll be right over 4 years when it's all said and done.

  • We were together just over 2 years before he proposed, and we're having a 9 month engagement.
  • Proposed after 4.5 years together, lived together for 3 years
  • Got engaged on our 3.5 year anniversary and will be married on our 5 year anniversary. Our entire relationship until January was long-distance because we went to different colleges. I moved in with him (he has one year left of school) as soon as I graduated, so we will have lived together for about 1 year & 3 months before the wedding.
  • Dated for a little less than 4 years before we got engaged. We've been living together for a little over a year and just celebrated our 6 year anniversary.

We had been together a little over 3.5 years when he proposed. Lived together for 3...so it will be 4.5 years when we get married.

  • Dating for five months when he proposed, wedding will be just shy of our two-year anniversary.  I'll throw in that we are not living together till we are married, since some previous posters included that in the timeline.

Love all the different answers, just goes to show there is no "magic dating timeline" for proposals and engagement times :)

    ooh long story

We had been together for about 6 months before we moved in together.  Had been living together a year when he proposed (so together a year and a half). I'm 29 (just turned) and he's 28.

So, we met back in high school doing a play, my friend had a huge crush on him.  He liked me, I told him my friend liked him no.  They dated, it didn't work, we had been friends for a year and he still wanted to date me.  We finally dated, when I was 16 for maybe 6 months at the most (and I broke his heart according to him) but we stayed friends after we broke up.
After my freshman year of college and right before his freshman year, I was like, why didn't I want to be with him again, he's hot!  I started hanging out with him more with the intent to get together, but he was talking about how he liked my little step sister (who was 15 or so at the time, but he was somehow unaware that it was my step sister because she looked different than she did when he met her back when she was 12-and it was his best friend's almost step sister- BF and SS's parents got engaged).  They dated and that made him eww to me for quite some years.  We both went NYC for college so we kept in touch, still hung out together.  He had this problem of trying to kiss me whenever he got drunk even if I had a boyfriend.  My Mom talked about how she liked him the best of any guys I dated.  His Mom told me she always wished we could get back together.

Finally the "eww you dated my little step sister" wore off and I found myself single again (after a very uphappy 5 year relationship) and FI was there for me through out the whole messy ordeal. I kind of woke up and was like, why have't I given him a chance again, he's amazing?  So FI and I went out one night, and an old Irish guy at a pub was talking to me when I went to get drinks, Old Irish guy said to me "Bringing a drink to your boyfriend, what a lucky fellow" to which I replied "oh, we're just friends" and he said "really, because he looks at you like he's afraid you're going to walk away".  I kissed FI that night (FI later told me he was telling himself that night to let go of me and give up on me because we were never going to happen).  So after dating in high school, him dating my step sister for a few months, and 14 years of friendship, we finally started seeing each other, moved in together, and got engaged.

I'm glad he never gave up on me.  He's the most amazing man I've ever known and it just took a little time, and an old Irish guy to open my eyes.
