Adam and I have been friends for several years. We started dating with a motorcycle ride. He took me to Eldon, Iowa so that I could see the American Gothic House first hand. I studied art in college and have my K-12 Art teaching certification. He just couldn't believe that no guy I had dated had ever brought me there before. I had such a wonderful time, eventhough the American Gothic House Center was closed so we couldn't enjoy the exhibits. We've continued our relationship, enjoying many of the same activities and riding on the motorcycle every chance we get.
My fiance has to travel for work from April till December. He is able to come home for pretty much one weekend a month and its usually scheduled around holidays. In May, he got to come for Memorial Day weekend. On Monday, May 30th, 2011 we decided it was such a nice day we needed to take a motorcycle ride. We first made our rounds, paying respect to his late grandfather for the holiday and visiting with his family. Then we took off for our ride.
Before too long I realized he was taking me back to the American Gothic House.I was excited hoping that the American Gothic House Center would be open for the holiday and I was not dissappointed. We went in and looked through the exhibit. We watched a group of visitors all dress up nad head out to have their pictures taken in front of the house. I noticed a sign saying pie and pointing towards the American Gothic House. Adam and I happily went to see what the Pitchfork Pie Stand had for sale. Beth had just pulled a mini strawberry pie from the oven and it sounded too good to resist.
Adam and I walked out to some picnic tables outside and began to enjoy the delicious pie. We joked about how delicious it was and if we ever got married that we should have strawberry pie instead of cake because it was so good. Adam then got up and told me he was going to ask one of the volunteers where there was a garbage can so he could throw away our pie plate. What I now know is that he was informing the volunteers of what he was about to do.
He told me we needed to go around to the front and back in the enterance there. Then once inside he said "oh c'mon let's go dress up and get our picture taken!" I of course was all for having a little fun. The volunteers were more than helpful. Finding the perfect fit for our outfits and even practicing our pose.
Once outside and in front of the house the ladies got us ready for our picture. They helped make it look just like the painting. Then the lady asked us if we would like to do something silly. Before I could say a thing Adam hadns me the pitchfork and says "I have something silly to do." He proceeded to get down on one knee. He pulled a ring from his pocket and asked me to marry him. I couldn't stop smiling and I of course said yes! I kiss him and the rest seems like such a blurr now.
The volunteers captured the moment and we have pictures of our proposal. It was such a wonderful proposal and I am so happy to be planning my wedding to my best friend. We are planning for October 2012!
