I'm an American living in Iceland where I met a wonderful German guy who had to move back to Germany recently. We've been doing long distance for almost a year and have managed to see each other once a month in various countries during that time.
Anyway, I was just there and on Sunday we decided to go ahead and get engaged, and even though Germans totally don't do engagement rings I told him that since I'm an American I need a Ring. On a Sunday in Germany, no real stores are open though, so we went to the train station, the only place where anything's open, and he bought me a ring from a kiosk there. We then went for a walk in the gorgeous forests near where he lives and just grinned at each other the whole time. It was all very spontaneous and cheesy and so romantic.
We're probably going to get married in Germany where he's got tons of family with great connections and planning enthusiasm (hello uncle with the wine distribution business and horses & carriage). Over the next few months I'm also figuring out how to move my self and my job to yet another new country.
exciting stuff and I'm thrilled about it all but I have to say the planning of a wedding seems to be the most daunting part, with our families and friends spread out over so many countries. How to pick a place that suits both of us and is easily accessible for all the possible attendees from everywhere?
So, if anyone here's got advice on which forums might be helpful, I'm curious to hear from others who're not in the US and trying to work in German/European wedding ideas.
