when to register

So my knot timeline says I should start registering now, 8 months before my wedding. That seems early to me though. What did/is everyone else doing?

As long as you register about a month before your bridal shower (or engagement party or any other gathering where people might want to buy you and FI something),you are good to go. The earlier you register, the more you should keep tabs on it for discontinued or seasonal items that may need to be replaced.

We are getting married at the end of May. We are thinking we will register in early December so that if any of our family isn't sure about Christmas gifts they can turn to it. We'll then update or refresh in March before the shower. So December would be 5 months from our wedding.

i registered about a month ago and am getting married in march.  as long as you check your registry periodically to make sure nothing has gotten discontinued you should be fine.  whenever your personal preference is really.

We actually registered a year in advance for a few things because we had an engagement party.  After that, it was six months for the heavy duty registering but I wanted to get it out of the way before the summer (wedding is this weekend).

We registered about a month before the shower invitations went out and it worked out fine for us. (about 4 -4 1/2 months before the wedding.)

Technically you don't need to register until about a week prior to sending shower invites-- just be sure to double check everything & get the insert cards for the shower invites.   You can always start checking china patterns, and picking out the perfect color for the ubiquitous Kitchenaid stand mixer.  We found a china pattern (Vintage Jewel by Lenox) then found that Bed, Bath & Beyond's regular price is the same as the Dillards/JC Penney sale price for many of our items.  Plus BB&B treated us fantastic and kept the store open late for us two times in the same week, and have a good return policy in case there are errors.  Make it fun- they should treat you like absolute royalty when you're in for a registry.  We were very turned off of the Target registry, if anyone wants the scoop please  ask.
