Which should we buy? Can a Blue Nile GIA certified diamond purchased through the internet be more trustworthy than a jeweler certified Acid Image tested diamond?? (Background below)
Hi,
I have studied for years about diamonds and recently was told by a jeweler that Acid Imaging tests would be a new standard in grading a diamond. Acid Imaging is supposed to show how much light the diamond reflects (its shine).
Here’s the dilemma we found a diamond at the jeweler but they certify their own diamonds (Husar’s House of Fine Diamonds) but they are a very reputable jeweler. They showed us a picture of the Acid Imaging with a diamond full of red which indicates light reflection. Great right…but I found the same diamond (meaning specifications Color, Cut, Clarity, Carat) on Blue Nile for half the price. They told me even though its GIA certified (the Blue Nile diamond which is colorless, ideal cut, IF clarity, and 1 carat) that doesn’t mean it shines??
I’m totally perplexed, so I called a gemologist and he says that as far as insurance and value a GIA certified diamond is more valuable than one done independently. And that the Acid Imaging really isn’t helpful because it’s just a picture where as a cut can be verified by its dimensions and measurements.
The jeweler told me GIA certification means nothing because anybody can laser inscribe a diamond and that the true differentiator was if the diamond had an Acid Image test to prove its shine??
