Engagement Ring Disasters

Not sure if there is a post on this or not already, when I tried to search, it just said error again and again. Anyways...
I got engaged last month. My fiance picked out the sweetest ring, it fit my personality perfectly, however, it did not fit my finger. lol We had to get it sized. We went to Macy's because that is where he bought the ring. When he purchased it, he told the sales girl, he thought my ring size was at most a 5. She said it was fine, that it could be sized down to whatever size was needed. We went to the store, and a different sales girl attempted to size me. I never wear rings, so I was unsure of my size and how a ring should fit. She kept saying I was a 5 1/2, but it was fairly loose. I told her, and she argued, saying that is how it was suppose to fit. I reluctantly agree, and it gets sent away for almost 3 weeks. We pick the ring up, and I try it on. It falls off my finger. We are now speaking to the head of the jewelry department there, and she still argues that it fits, as it falls off in front of her face. Finally, she tells us that it was not possible to size that ring past a 5 1/2. She is telling me there is nothing she can do, and we are stuck with a ring I cannot wear. To add salt to the wound, she goes and gets a baggy to put it in so I "don't have to carry it around". She refuses to find out my actual ring size. We call customer service, and despite their no refunds on sized rings policy, we get our money back. I cried, needless to say, because I fell in love with the ring, but more importantly, my fiance was so proud of his choice, and would have not picked it if he knew it couldn't be re-sized. We ended up going to Ben Bridge to find out my real size (4 1/2- 4 3/4 depending on style). The woman there was so nice, that we ended up buying my new ring there. By the way, if anyone is still looking for any jewlry, Ben Bridge's rings come with a life time warranty that covers cleanings and the diamonds/stones if they fall out or anything included in the ring's cost. My fiance had to pay $60 for warranty for 3 years at Macy's. Random info for you lol

Anyone else have an engagement ring disaster story?

Re: Engagement Ring Disasters

  • Are you going to keep the original ring from Macys, or try to tell it?  If you keep it, you could always take the stone and have a jeweler put it in a different setting.  It could then just be another nice piece of jewelry for you to have.
  • Fiance ordered a ring off the Brilliant Earth website..and it was beautiful....except it was lopsided!!  There are diamonds on the band and instead of it being 8/8 on either side of the centre stone, it was 9/7.  A really obvious lopsided ring.

We took pictures and sent them to Brilliant Earth, and they paid for shipping back and everything to get it fixed.  They also threw in the resizing for free as well (went to a random jewelry shop and got my finger measured).  It was a long 3 weeks, but when I got it back...it was 8/8!!  No more lopsided ring!

We look back now and it's just funny...but at the time we were like "what kind of QA process lets a lopsided ring go by??"  Ha!

  • I'm really sorry to hear you had a bad experience with Macy's.  FI got my ring there and we had a good experience....sometimes the service varies from store to store...some associates are definitely better than others.  If anyone ever has any trouble at Macy's, ask to speak to a manager or the store manager.  The company is very service-focused and the managers want to make you happy.  I'm glad that in the end the issue was resolved and that you received a full refund, and you ended up with a ring that fits and you are happy with!

  • That's really too bad that you had such a bad experience with your first ring! I can't believe they said that you couldn't size it smaller than a 5.5. I originally got my ring sized at 6 but realized that it was much too big, and right now I believe it is at a 5.5 and it is STILL too big. I think I just get nervous when I'm at the store being sized and assume if its snug then it is too small. I think I will probaby end up being a size 5, but it shouldn't be a problem at the jeweler we went through. It is a good thing at least that you were able to find a ring that fit you perfectly! :)

  • I guess my story isn't THAT bad, just a little disappointing. My Fiance asked me the size of my finger and not knowing much about rings I said probably a 7.....well I'm a 5...so obviously it didn't fit. Well a month ago I went to a department store to get it sized because I assume the department store will hire trust worthy people. Well the jeweller tells me it will be 2 weeks, 3 tops because precious items get sent to a head office. Well I am reluctant to hand over my newly acquired and much loved ring but in the interest of quality, I agree. It's been over 4 weeks and I call every day and they tell me it's still not in. FInally I told them I don't care what condition it's in I want it IMMEDIATELY. I have spent the first month and a half of our engagement without a ring. Every time I tell someone our exciting news, they ask to see the ring. Even some of my family hasn't sen it yet. I just don't know what to do......I just want my ring back.
  • I’m surprised they didn’t offer you the option of using a size adjuster with your ring. I got our ring online at http://shopdiamondprices.com so we had to go to a local jeweler to find out this option, but it was definitely worth it. The fit was a little loose to begin with, but when it started getting colder, the ring just kept falling off. Our local jewelry store was able to add a ring size adjuster that kept the ring perfectly snug. This is a great option is the ring is unable to be resized or starts to become loose and you don’t want to go through the process of getting it resized like us.

  • My ring was too big too and they had to put these "balls" in the inside bottom of it to make it tighter without sizing it again maybe that would work for you. I'm sorry you had such a bad experience with this. GL
  • Wow, I can't believe Macy's was so rude to you!!  FI knew that I was a size 4, but when he went into  Helzberg's, they didn't believe him at all!  They said he should just get a size 7!  HAHAHA, literally 3 sizes too big!  So of course, there's absolutely no way I can wear the ring, and had to wear it around my neck for a few days.  I took it in to get resized, but they still din't believe I was a 4....a 4.25.  I had NO idea that quarter sizes existed, lol.  Well, after I got my ring back a few days later, I was playing piano during choir rehearsal, and TWICE my ring flew off of my finger and on to the floor, literally!  Needless to see, I went back again and finally got my ring down to a 4.  It's still loose when my hands are cold (which is pretty often), but it won't fly off of my finger.

I'm glad you were able to finally get another ring!!

  • FI stole my high school class ring out of the drawer in my bedroom and took it to Shane Co. when he bought my engagement ring to get an estimate on the size. It turned out to be a little too big, but we got it re-sized in a weekend.

He bought an engagement ring/wedding band set and even though we got them re-sized together, I am fairly certain the wedding band is a tiny bit smaller than my e-ring. We decided we'll take it to Shane Co. when we get FI's wedding band next summer and have them look at it.

  • Dave tied paper around my finger and measured it to try to get my ring size, waaaay off!! My finger wound up being a size 4.5 and we'd measured it at 7. He got it at Shaws in the mall and it took them 10 days to get it back to me!

  • Oh my.. I seen this post and I can totally relate. I just got engaged on November 28th, 2010 and my finance bought a ring at LeRoy's. Of course he never asked me what my ring size was because he wanted me to be totally clueless. Well when he proposed to me, the ring ended up being too big and was a size 7 when I am a size 5. We took the ring to get sized on December 7th and was told it would be done on December 17th.  On the day it was supposed to be done, we didnt even recieve a call from them that it would be done so my finance called them. The store didnt answer, and he left a message. He recieved a returned message and they stated that it would be done early next week. Well its already the middle of the week and no call or response from when it would be done. I am so upset on their  horrible customer service. The least that they could do is keep us in the loop on the status of the ring. The sad part is they have had the ring longer than I actually got to wear it on my finger!
  • Oh that sucks for you!  I hope you love your new ring as much, or managed to get it as similar as possible to the one you previously had.

Thankfully I didn't have any problems with my ring.  My fiance got one of my other rings and measured it on his hand, it fitted against the knuckle of his little finger (I have tiny fingers).  The jeweller didn't believe him that my fingers were so small so he made it 2 sizes bigger!  Needless to say, it was too big so we took it back and it was made 2 sizes smaller (the jeweller was so surprised!).  Then I realised it was still slightly too big, I felt like I had to hold it on, so I ended up having it made one size smaller again.  Both times I took it in I could pick it up the following day.

  • Wow, thats rough! I wear a size 3 and had to have my ring sent away to be re-made b/c the stones would have popped out if they tried to size it down. I had to wait 2 months to get it.

I lost my ring once. That was pretty scary. I had to take it off b/c I was moving metal shelves and it was pinching my finger. I put it in my pocket and went to FIs moms house briefly...it fell out of my pocket in the bathroom and they have 2 large dogs. OMG! We found it a few hours later, but those were the scariest hours of my life!

  • I feel your frustration, I was with FI when I got my ring, however, He picked it out, Iove my ring more than anything, but when it came back from being sized, (I am a 9 which they don't carry in the stores), my outer part of my ring was uneven, so I sent it back to be redone.

They gave me a two week time line, so after my two weeks, I called, nope not back yet, but it is in transit they said, so I called on Monday, and then told it was still at there, at this point I am livid so I wait and have my FI call, they said it will be a week because of the detail of the work, it was in 4 days later, NOT FIXED... so needless to say, My ring is still not FIXED.. So I feel your pain, but I AM really Happy you found a ring and are HAPPY :)Laughing
  • Whoa! It's weird that a big retailer like Macy's was so miserable to you. I suppose it's good you found out before you ordered wedding bands from them though!

I'm lucky enough to have a regular ring size (7 1/4), and my ring ended up being absolutely perfect. However, my poor fiance had a giant heartattack twenty minutes before we proposed because he thought we would have a ring disaster!

We were poking through some  jewellery stores in the Fairmont Lake Louise while we  waited for the horses to show up (so he could propose). I usually can't find rings that fit well, and the first store had  one that fit perfectly, so I asked what size it was. The woman said, "Oh it's a 9 3/4.". Well my fiance had already bought my engagement ring based on the size of my great grandmother's e-ring that I often wear...which is 7 1/4. Little did I know he was about ready to die when he heard that.

Thankfully she had no idea what she was talking about, and it fits fine. Sometimes I think it doesn't quite take a genius to work in a jewellery store...

  • Oh god, that's so not fun! But you're not alone, for sure. I got my ring at a major jeweler (I worked there at the time so got a good discount haha) and still had huge problems with sizing, etc. It sucks at the time but it all makes for good memories / stories later ... as long as you get it resolved!

I actually wrote a memoir about my wedding bc it was so ridiculous and I'm trying to get it published - hope you can join my Facebook campaign by clicking "like" on the ;age! http://tiny.cc/fygi3
  • FI tried my ring on his pinky finger to guess the size, well it was 2 sizes too big!  I work at a school and 2x's while instructing it flew off my finger!  After a small heart attack I was easily able to find it, but my suggestion is to get it sized as soon as you can!
