First I should explain that my FI is very practical and doesn't do things without thinking it through many times. I was home on vacation in August before leaving for a month to work in Virginia (the state). He took me ring shopping before I left and we picked out a gorgeous ring! The whole time I was gone he kept teasing me that we weren't going to get engaged until after our 4 year anniversary (November 11).
I got home on October 5th, and we had a wedding to go to that weekend, so on the 6th we decided to run a last minute errand to get wrapping supplies for the wedding gift! After we finished he took me to get ice cream, and we decided to share a small Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Blizzard from DQ. He asked me if I wanted to go home or sit somewhere outside and eat the Blizzard, I decided to do it outside as it was beautiful and I didn't want to go home yet. He drove to a spot in Brainerd, MN (where we live) that overlooks the Mississippi River and is fairly private, and we shared our Blizzard. After we finished he asked if I wanted to go down by the river, and when I said yes he held my hand so I didn't slide down the little trail leading to the river's edge. We stood watching the birds play on the river (either geese or ducks) and the sun was starting to set over the river. He told me he had a surprise for me but that I had to promise him something to get it. Then he knelt down on the ground and said, "Promise to marry me?" and he was holding the ring in his hand!!
I cried because I had no clue he was intending to ask me that night, I knew he had asked his Dad and my Dad, but because he kept telling me he wasn't going to ask I didn't expect it! He planned the proposal to be like something out of a storybook (I read a lot) and wanted it to be special to us, the spot he picked was somewhere we only go together!
