Hello everyone!
Just introducing myself and sharing my engagement story. I'm a 31 year old children's librarian and am newly engaged to my best friend, who is 37 and sells machine parts. First marriage (and engagement) for both of us. We have three cats and can't wait to start adding human babies to our family.
I met FI on Sept 16th, 2010. Although it seemed fast, we moved in together in March (I was moving for my job and he wanted to go with me). We've talked about marriage quite a bit but never really seriously. Just a hypothetical "someday".
As the first anniversary of us starting to date approached, I knew he was up to something and had kind of guessed what was going on. He'd asked me a few months ago how i would feel about his mom's engagement ring and he and FMIL were really weird about a gift bag they exchanged a few weeks ago, so I figured he had the ring.
So, Friday night we had planned to go out to dinner and then go do a corn maze (we're incredibly goofy). I got home before him (rare) and got ready to go. I came downstairs and he was following me. Put his arms around me and said, "You know, I had a plan...but then you got home early and ruined it....but plans suck anyways"
I laughed.
He said "I love you. So much."
I said, "love you."
He got down on one knee (in the middle of our messy living room) and I said "what are you doing?"
With tears in his eyes, he opened the ring box and held it up. Said, "Marry me?"
I said, "Of course!" and just about knocked him over kissing him.
While still on his knees, he hugged me close. I told him he could get up and he looked up and said "well, the view is good from here." (he was looking right up at my chest and I'm a rather busty girl).
He got up and gave me the ring and said "It won't fit. I'm just sure"
Ring slid on and fits perfectly!
So we went out to dinner and toasted with wine.
Very simple, no big productions. But perfect. Four words- marry me? of course!
Then we called our mothers. Who already knew. So did our siblings and dads. My mom was all happy and excited.
His mom...oh my...he handed me the phone and she said congrats and then started sobbing. Told me that she loves me and can't believe how good I've been for her son and went on and on. It was really sweet and I felt so welcomed to his family.
During our dinner that night, I asked about time frame for a wedding and he said "Um, tomorrow?"
Now, I can't wait to be married to this man, but he knows I do want a wedding. I want to wear that dress!

So, we're pretty firm on late August 2012 but not choosing an exact date until we can discuss location logistics with our families. When his mom took us out to lunch to celebrate this yesterday and i mentioned wedidng plans, she was ecstatic (FBIL has been engaged for 3 years, dating for 9 and they don't even have a date set)
As for my ring - it's completely, fantastically vintage and unique and incredibly special/sentimental. It's his mom's engagement ring from her marriage to his dad. Which did end in divorce but is still special to FI because it was theirs. Probably made around 1970 and has a "70's" look to it. At first glance, it looks like a square with ovals on both sides, but it's actually a silver/white gold flower with a small diamond as its center. the ovals are the leaves and they have tiny diamonds on them. It's perfect and very "me".
Okay, now that my very long story is done, Thank you to anyone who read it. I just wanted to squee over my engagement with people and hate to annoy family and friends with too much right now.
