Ring shopping realization

So we went to look at rings yesterday, completely on a whim... My boyfriend and I have been talking about getting married for the last few months. We started out as friends in the beginning and somewhere along the way we fell in love, so we know without a doubt that we want to get married. 

The whole experience of trying on rings was so exciting and emotional for us. I am just really surprised that I ended up choosing something that I never thought I'd like. I mean, it's the most beautiful ring and we both love it. There's even a separate wedding band that matches it perfectly and when I tried them on together we both lit up. I just always figured that I'd want something else... I am a very classic and simple person but this ring is a vintage design with gorgeous filigree on the sides and diamonds down the shoulders with a cushion cut center solitaire surrounded by a diamond halo... it's spectacular! Just never what I thought I'd like... is that common? 

Has anyone else experienced this? 

It's not that I'm worried. Don't get me wrong, I'm extremely excited and I realize that we can never really know what life has in store for us. Hell, I never thought I'd fall in love with him when we first met either -we were just friends! But I'm so glad that it happened this way. I guess I'm just looking for some similar stories and encouragement.

I used to be a engagement ring specialist at a local jewellery store. Believe me when I say this happens ALL the time.

A ring is like a dress they either look awful or great on the hanger, you need to try it on to see if you really like it.

Personally I wanted a princess cut solitare, set in white gold.

I ended up with a round center stone with side stones, set in yellow gold.... and I lvoe it more than anythng else that I have ever seen.

When I put my ring on I knew it was the one, and never tried on another ring after that.

I have always loved simple princess cut rings but ended up going with a vintage pear cut ring with a lot of filigree work on the basket. I love it and I'm so so happy with it. Everyone who sees it always says how stunning it is and what a lucky girl I am.

I totally agree! I always thought I wanted a princess cut setting with diamonds all along the band and sidestones -- the whole thing. but I'm SO happy with my round cut with round sidestones and a plain band. It suits me more than I thought it would, even though I originally thought I wanted something completely different.

I always thought I wanted a round solitaire, but when I tried on rings I quickly realized I hated the way it looked on my finger. It is a really good idea to try them on before.

I always thought I wanted a princess cut in white gold. FI got me a three round stone in yellow. I could not love it more. You will also experience this when you go dress shopping. You get an idea in your head, and it completely changes. Don't worry!

I never liked yellow gold, and wasn't looking for diamonds, either (didn't want him spending an arm and a leg on a ring). I wanted white gold or silver, and a colored stone (garnet, amethyst, and emerald were some of the ones we had discussed). I also love scrollwork and filigree type decoration. 

He proposed to me with a yellow gold 1/3 ct diamond solitaire ring. When I saw it, I absolutely loved it. This ring is over a hundred years old, and it was his great-grandmother's ring. Before she died, she gave it to his mother and asked her to hold it for him until he was ready to get married. He had no idea it existed until his mother gave it to him on Christmas night. He proposed on New Years night. I still catch myself staring at it often. Originally, I was going to get a white gold band, but lately, I"ve been liking the idea of a simple gold band to match it.

Things rarely turn out exactly as we expect the to, but they usually turn out like the're supposed to
