Help!! Law student planning long distance wedding--going crazy!

I just saw this board and figured i would see if anyone else is dealing with the same type of situation.  I am trying to plan my October Philadelphia wedding, while living in California, and finishing law school (summer classes then graduate in the fall).   I am becoming soooo overwhelmed. Is there anyone else crazy like me? If so, any suggestions on handling it all?

  • Are you totally set on October? Because that is a very short time to plan, and I think that it would be very hard to get married in the middle of the semester. I got engaged in Feb, and set the wedding for June, 2011, so that I would have to do any planning until after the bar.

  • I'm in the same position (or similar, I have longer to plan but am in law school and planning a wedding 1000 miles away).  What I'm doing is  setting aside a week where I can go and make all the plans I have to, then focusing on other things.  Thats not always possible but it seems like its going to help.  Also, is there anyone you can ask to do things where the wedding will be?

Ha - yes. I'm a PhD student in Oklahoma planning an August KC wedding. We had a relatively short engagement (about 6 months) simply because I can't deal with the whole planning and being a scholar at the same time thing. :)

As far as advice on planning, we made sure to be very efficient. For example on our last weekend trip to KC for my birthday in April we picked up rings, checked out venues, talked with the priest, and picked out my dress all in the same day. So when we got back to Oklahoma (right in time for the finals push) we could concentrate more on school. This summer I am only taking one class that ends in early July (same schedule that the class I'm teaching is on). So hopefully I can tie up loose ends then.

    Good luck!

  • @Nat:  we've been engaged since september. We went to philly over christmas where I had set aside an extra week to book all my vendors (which i did). I have the date, venue, caterer, florist, photographer, dress, decorations, etc....but i guess my troubles now are just making all the millions of little decisions. And law school has been stressing me out.

@everyone else:  i just needed to vent and was wondering what you all are doing to destress. I feel like if im not studying, i have to be doing things for the wedding. I have no down time and ive getting overwhelmed. Just like little things- trying to pick out the invite wording AHHHH.

@steffy: my FI is from KC. we actually had a bet on the wedding location on the Chiefs v. Eagles game last fall. Lol, needless to say....the eagles won and the wedding is in philly ;)

  • I live in Canada and am getting married in Australia next year. I feel your pain, it's sooo hard doing everything from a distance! I'm a student also, and will be graduating a month before I get married. That last month will be hectic! Luckily we've already booked a reception venue, and I'll hopefully be there for a few months this year. I'll have to cram everything in while I'm there!

I just finished law school in December and took the Bar in Feb.... and I found out I passed this past week so big sigh of relief for me.

While I wanted to play wedding when I should of been studying for the bar, I would tell my mom a vision or an idea and let her research it. She loves weddings just as much as I do so she was happy to help. Maybe you can find a good friend to help out b.c she just loves weddings.

I also created an email where ppl could send me any idea or pictures and when I sat aside time for wedding planning I could look into that but keep it closed if I needed to be studying.

Final bit of advice start planning fun things.. I know in my state we have a travel directory that lists fun things I list all the fun things I see in my calendar and then FI and I try to do some of those things when we are free.
  • those are all really great ideas. Thanks so much!

  • I am in the same situation! I graduate May 2011. I take the bar in July 2011. I am trying to get married Aug. 2011. Is this a good idea? Can it be done? HELP! :)
