Donation Favors...good or bad?

We were sitting around trying to figure out our wedding favors and we couldn't agree on something that was practical (as in people might actually use it) and cheap....Sooo...we came up with donating money to a charity.  We would do Breast Cancer (his mom and my memaw both are in remission at this point) and Autism (since I teach children with this disability)...they are both very meaningful to us.  Is this a bad idea? And if we do go with this, how do you announce that this is what you're doing instead of favors?  I've seen pictures where people announce with a place card at each seat and then a big sign before they walk into the hall.Opinions please!!!!!

you will get varied opinions on this, but personally I love the idea. My FI and I are also doing donations for breast cancer research (my mom was diagnosed a few months ago and I have a college friend who lost her life to the disease). With help, we are baking cookies in the shape of breast cancer ribbons ( I found cookie cutters on a website that donates a portion of the proceeds to research) and attaching the name cards to the cookies. We will probably also put a note on each table about the donation.

I like it because it has meaning for you both.  If it was a random charity I dont know if it would have been so for it.  Maybe you can make little pink ribbons for everyone.  Just a thought...but its cute without the ribbons.  At least its not for "The Human Fund".  haha.  I'm a big Seinfeld fan. lol!!

My FI and I will be doing this as well. We are making bookmarks (I'm a teacher) with our epics on one side and a note saying what we did. We are donating to the scholarship that put us both through college. We are leaving a 5x7 frame on the table that explains what the scholarship is and why it is so important to us. A lot of people say don't say "In lieu of favors" so we wrote..."As a token of our appreciation we have...blah blah blah." I hope that helps. GL

Donation to charity is a wonderful idea!! Most favors are either lost or left behind (unless it's food) I was just at a wedding with a donation favor and they put a little note at the bottom of the menu card informing the guests a donation had been made

I think it is a great idea, especially since the charities having meaning to the two of you. We did the same and made bookmarks out of plant-able seed paper with instructions on how everyone could take home their bookmark, plant it, and wildflowers would grow from it. Someone on this board had great wording for the bookmarks (better than what I used). Hopefully they will chime in and share. If you want to see a pic of ours, check out heidi's blog entry about our day.
