ONline classes...

UGH Most of my master's classes are online because they aren't offered at my university and this is the only university in my area with a health studies program....

I am having such a hard time because the internet is my BIGGEST distraction when it comes to school (facebook and theknot) So it makes it even worse that I am required to be online most the time when studying and submitting assignments! It's so annoying because I can't seem to get anything done with these distractions! Anybody know what I'm talking about or have any advice? Foot in mouth

Re: ONline classes...

  • I prefer online classes! I am doing my Master's online too. I find that it allows me to have more time to do fun things....I'm a huge procrastinator but I manage to get everything done. I used to disconnect myself from the Wireless Router when I was writing a paper to keep me focused. Maybe that would help!

  • I also like online classes because it allows you to do things when it's convenient for you (ie watch/listen to the lectures). I do find I get distracted, but I'm getting better. If I'm listening to a lecture, that 40 mins or so is devoted solely to that lecture and nothing else. When I'm reading, I keep the computer turned off. I write rough notes on paper before writing essays, and the computer is generally off for that as well (I do all my research from real paper books, not online). It's a challenge, for sure, but you have to realize that the sooner the work gets done, the more time you have to do other things and not feel guilty about that. I'm starting to find also, that when I get into writing a paper on something I'm really passionate about I don't feel tempted to go online, I just want to write the paper. When you can choose topics, try to choose stuff you like, it's easier to get it done that way.

    Life is good today.
  • I remember a while back, someone saying that they had their BF/FI/whatever change their passwords for all the time-wasting websites (like TK, FB, etc) for finals because she had a ton of papers to write and needed internet access to research, but kept getting distracted.  He wasn't supposed to tell her the new password, and changed them back when finals were over.  It worked really well for her; maybe you could do something like that when you have projects due?

  • I had the same problem as you when I took online classes... not only was the lure of other online activities distracting, but it was really hard for me to make myself learn the material in other ways besides listening to the lecture... I ended up using the computer lab at my school anyway because it was frowned upon if you were doing anything other than school work...

  • Amen...
i am right there with you unfortunately. i have a paper due actually in a little over an hour and yet here i am. I try to give myself set amounts of work time and then a five minute break to do something that is more interesting like FB or TK. if you have a timer it works a lot better. well off to attempt to focus on my paper. lol good luck oh yeah a lot of prayer helps too Smile

  • I'm in the same exact boat, I get distracted constantly, but I end up finishing in time. I have NO idea how. Normally I'll complete an assignment and then tell myself I can spend a bit of time on FB or TK, then do another assignment and then back on TK or FB for awhile again. It seems to work for me. :)

  • Glad to know I'm not the only one!! Great suggestions...I have tried a few before like having FI switch my password. I always find some way to get him to switch it back. I like the idea of getting some work done and then taking a small break!

It's funny bc posting this actually made me want to check the knot more to see what y'all had to say! Why does it have to be soo addicting? I have a paper and a case study due Sunday night  which I am barely making any progress on. AND our engagement pictures are tomorrow so i'm wasting time freaking out over what I should wear!
