I'm so confused...vent (a bit long)

This semester is my last for all my transfer classes. I was planning on going to the near by university because they have a really good animal science/health department. Now I'm not sure what I want to do because they only offer those classes during the day and I work full time for the state. I wasn't planning on quitting my job to go to school so I'd only be able to take one or two classes per quarter. So I know it's going to take a very long time to get my degree. I also don't think that the state offers any jobs under animal science/health other than animal technician, but I'm making more than that now.

Working with animals has always been my passion. I have an AS in Pet Science but the thing is, it's not even being put to use at the moment. I work in an office setting as a secretary.

My dad is suggesting for me to just get a degree in something that does offer classes during the evening (like business), but I'm not interested in anything other than animal science/health. I'm so confused on what to do.

  • Could you work part-time? That way you could go to classes 2-3 days a week and still make at least some money or quit your current job and find something so you can just work in the evenings or on weekends. I was able to go to school full time in undergrad and still work over 20/week, which may not be enough money, but it is definitely possible. I know lots of people now that schedule all of their classes on either 2 or 3 days so they can work all of the other days. It is totally possible, if you really want to go to school for animal science/health, it is totally possible and keep a job, it just might not be the job you want right now. You have to consider what things you're willing to sacrifice - your current job or your future job?
  • I'm in the same boat as you! I'll be transferring to get my BS next semester. However, I'm having a hard time finding a job that will work around my school schedule. I've come to the realization that my schooling has to come first. In the long run, if you plan on having that job you really want and that will pay real money, your school has to come first. I'm torn right now because I'm really trying to save as much as I can for this wedding but my school schedule is so hectic, I dont know how long I can try to balance that and work. If you have to be in school longer because you'll take a lighter course load, so be it! Do what you have to do. In my course of study, a Masters Degree is required for me to begin working. As long as your fiancee fully understands (I'm sure he will) that you have long term goals that you need to work towards, being in school for a bit longer won't seem so bad Smile
  • Quitting my job or going part time is not an option for us right now. I'm bringing in most of the financial load to save for a down payment on a house plus put away money for the wedding.

So taking a light school load and going to school for a longer period of time is what I'm probably going to have to do. My fiance does not want me to just quit school either. He's very supportive of me getting my BS degree, no matter how long it takes. I think he wants me to get my BS more than I actually do. I really dislike school. I thought I was done after getting my AS.

  • if you dislike school, and your degree is probably not going to help you in the direction you are looking at taking right now then why go?  I am all for education and I think it is very important, but if you don't like school then it is going to be really hard for you to maintain going to school for years to get a degree.

Going to school is typically a lot cheaper in the long run of you go full time.  Yes this is not always feasible I get that, but I think you just need to financially plan what is important to you right now- a house or your degree?

there are several other options for being involved with animals other than through the government.  And probably even better opportunities in CA that aren't related to the government.

  • Biology is something I have thought of. I'm sure it will all work out somehow. I know getting a job outside of the state would most likely get me a job working with animals. The only thing that is holding me back are the benefits and the retirement plan.

Saving for a house is more important right now so I guess school will have to be put on hold for a while.
