Last semester living

We're getting married in August 2011 and FI will have a semester of college left after that (from right after our wedding until January).  He currently has an apartment at school, so we could live there, and they will let you move out anytime within six months AFTER graduation, which is really nice.  The problem is, we don't want to stay in the town where his college is -- and I have a job here in my hometown (100 miles away from his school) that I'd like to keep until he can find a good career.  Has anyone dealt with a similar situation?  Maybe we could find an apartment halfway in between the two places, but then we'll get stuck with a lease for six months or something... but maybe it's worth it?  Any advice?

Re: Last semester living

  • We had the same type of problem...and ended up just putting off the wedding until he's done with school. That was the best solution for us...sorry, I'm no help! I will say that I have friends who got married this summer who are now living many states away from each other (VA and TX) because one of them is an Army LT and at training. It can be done that way...especially only for a semester! You could still have "your (plural) place" but he could have somewhere he stayed during the week for school or something.
  • We were in the same situation, except it was only 30 miles, not 100.  I did the same thing someone else mentioned - arranged my classes so I only had to go on T/Th, then I left the house at 6:30 those morning so I could make it in time for my 8 am class.  I was there all day, but it was great to have a 4 day weekend all the time!  The commute would suck, but if he can just take T/Th classes, it would be fine.  You kind of get used to it.

When I was coaching college softball, we had a player get married between her freshman and sophomore years.  Her husband already had a job about 2 hours from school so they lived there and she commuted.  If she had a late night or had to be there early the next morning, she stayed with a friend.  Does he have someone he can stay with semi-regularly?

Another option is, like you mentioned, to get an apartment halfway between.  I went to college with a couple who did that.  We opted not to because we didn't see any reason for us both to have a crappy commute and we didn't want to move again 6 months later.

Finally, you could live apart for a few months.  If he scheduled his classes right, he could come home on weekends.  Maybe he could even live with a friend/roommate(s) to save money.
  • Thanks for all your advice and support, everyone!  It's a lot to think about, but I'm glad to have some good ideas and opinions.  It also got me thinking that there is a train that runs all along the line between my hometown (where I work) and his school... he hates taking the train, but I love it, so I guess that provides another option for me if I end up being the one to commute.  Also, this time, I won't let him wait until a week before school starts to schedule his classes!  =P  Thanks again!

I actually commute to school 4 days a week. It's about 50 minutes to an hour, but it's cheaper than the rent I'd pay to live in the city where my school is. Plus, on the train, I'm actually able to do work (which you can't do when you're driving). You just need to be flexible and it really depends on the train schedules.
  • Like PP, I actually enjoy commuting because it gives me time to read.  When I was still taking classes, I could study, take notes, and do class readings as well, which was really nice since it was built-in reading time.
