Is it too far?

So about 50% of my guests will be OOT and as I was designing my map for invites I got scared that my ceremony and reception sites are too far apart, 11 miles (17 min).  They are both in Minneapolis and we have driven the distance ourselves during the worst of traffic and it is a max of 30min in these conditions.  I am still trying to work in a way to transport guests from ceremony to reception, will definitely provide transportation for WP & grandparents. Unfortunately though, as it looks right now we won't be able to provide transportation between the 2 sites, it's just too expensive. There is a possibility that my uncle who has a big RV coach will be able to help transport, but I don't want to bank on that until he offers.

So should I change the reception or ceremony site?? TIA!

Re: Is it too far?

  • I don't think it's too far.  I went to a wedding where the reception was about 30 minutes (maybe more) away from the ceremony venue.  If you love both the venues, then that is all that matters!
  • 11 miles isn't bad at all. If you love both locations and they are in your budget I think guests can tuff it up to support you on your special day.
  • I agree with pps that 11 miles isn't bad at all.

FI and I been to weddings about that distance and some even further. With such a short distance, I wouldn't expect the Bride/Groom to pay for transportation to and from the ceremony.

  • Agreed, mine are only 2-3 miles apart so I don't have a huge problem with it.  But I feel that as long as there is a clear map or directions included in the invitation or program, a little bit of a drive is generally expected between locations.
  • I don't think it's too far. I recently went to a wedding in Kansas City where the reception site was about 25 or so minutes away from the church. They provided maps for everyone and gave people plenty of time to get over there.
  • Mine's about 30 minutes away from the church, but it is an incredible location. But we are also using buses to transport some people who may not want to drive or people who would like to drink at the reception.

Anyway, I don't think that 15 minutes is too far at all!
