For you dog owners

Have you ever taken your dog to obedience school? Have you tried doggy daycare? My dog seriously needs to learn a couple things, so I know I need to get her some training. She knows sit and lay, but stop, drop it or come here she refuses to learn. The only training I know is through PetSmart, but I don't know anyone who has taken a dog there.Also, now that I will be working 9 hrs a day, I want to take her to some kind of daycare 2 or 3 days a week. If she stays crated too long once she gets out she is a stinker, so I need to do something. Again, I only know PetSmart who has the daycare, and don't know anyone who has taken their dog there. Any suggestions?

I've never taken Roxy to any kind of classes or daycare, but my FMIL took her dog to petsmart in San Bernardino years and years ago. She said they were great! I think SD also took her new puppy there...As far as the daycare goes I would just take her once and see how she acts when you pick her up. If she seems scared or if they lock her in a crate there then you might want to stop taking her...

Thats a good idea. See I don't want to pay to take her to daycare to be locked in a crate all day. She could do that for free at the house. If worse comes to worse I could go home on my lunch to let her out, since I get an hour and I am less than 10 mins away.I think I am going to enroll her in training then, I would think they would be pretty good, but I hadn't heard of anyone who has taken their dog there.

Maybe you can get a baby gate and lock her in a room so she's not so cooped up What is your kitchen like? Is there anything she could hurt in there?

See the kitchen would have been the best, but she has learned to climb...meaning she can climb OVER the baby gate.

OMG lol!!!! So maybe going home on your lunch would be your best bet

we didn't do petsmart, we went through a private trainer (the group classes are comparable in price) and it was the best decision ever. i strongly recommend it to any dog owner.

How did you find the private trainer? Was it just you, the dog and the trainer, or a couple other dogs with you? I have a feeling she will be the bad on in the class. Kind of like in Marley and Me.

she had an ad up at the vet. she is in the redlands area though, but i am sure that there are tons out in temecula. it was us and maybe five other dogs. it was good to socialize her and have other dogs there.. especially having the trainer there with her to correct any bad behavior. our dog was the one that barked at the other dogs and was skeptical of the trainer at first but it was really good to learn what we were supposed to do in those situations.

my mom took our dog to petsmart for training when i was little, but i dont remember how it went. I know we took our next dog there too... so maybe it went well? We took the dogs to petsmart to stay over night during the wedding, and it was wonderful. They really seemed to like it... and they got to play a lot. You should check into it!

How much do the training classes run?  Once Lulu gets over her kennel cough i want to take her to one.

My old man dog that we just put to sleep, we took him to the private group classes too. But, that was a lonnng time ago when we still lived in Wisconsin. The classes helped but that dog still did whatever he felt like. He only minded when he had his pinch collar on...which is what he wore in the training classes. A lady at my work took her dog to the PetSmart in Murrieta and got really good results. Her lab is a fricken angel compared to mine!

Jared trained our male himself and I took Purdy to some private classes I think they were in Rialto though so that wouldnt help you9 hours is a long time to be in a crate :0( look online for pet sitters  my neighbor is a pet sitter and I think she charges 15 a day but we are way out here so again that doesnt help you but im sure there are other people that do that also :0) I would call the local vets to see if they recomend anyone

When I  got my Yorkie about 4 years ago, we did the Petsmart classes. They were $100 each and we did levels 1 and 2. They worked very well. She still responds to the commands.

i think it also depends on the kind of dog too. Andrew trained our beagle, and it was really simple and he listens really well. However, he is a beagle, so he is so damn stubborn that if you arent on him 24/7 he will be in the trash as soon as your back is turned. our daschund was REALLY easy to train... he is seriously the best dog.

Thornton just graduated from puppy socialization class.  I'm so glad that we took him.  He learned how to play appropriately, get used to unusual sounds, etc....Today, my hubby took him to the doggy daycare for two hours.  They look to see how they interact with the adult dogs (which Thornton was terrified of when he first started puppy socialization class) to see if he would do well in their doggy daycare.  Stephen said he did very well.  So, we're thinking of taking him to the daycare once a week, which goes from 7-6, so he can play and learn to be around other dogs.  We also signed him up forthe Good Manners class.I have to tell you that we are SO GLAD we put him in these classes.  My hubby said he wish he did the same with Porsche.  He took Porsche to Pet Smart and it doesn't even compare to what Thornton has gotten from Cool Dog Training.

where is this training SD? i think Albert could use some puppy socialization...
