Help: Planning Suprise Wedding Ann. Party

ok sorry to be a butt, for asking for help and not being on here all the time...BUT O'well:) jk! I have these GREAT friends, who were a couple and then parents at a super young age...so they never had a big or even small wedding or celebration (they did vegas, by themselves), with family or friends...so now they just had their 20 anniversary, this past weekend, and in Jan. their 15 wedding ann. is coming! so with this crappy economy, and more so the unexpected cost of a broken car and tuition for their son and my friend in college, they had to cancel their 1st honeymoon/ann. get-away. which was going to be a trip to pismo and santa barbara for the weekend. Long story short a few of us decided to try and put a suprise anniversary party together for them, at most likely at my house. Since its 15 years, i decided to do silver. We have 5 1/2 weeks...the D day is Oct. 24. So any ideas, we are all pulling together, so we are going to try and do cheap and still try to be elegant. Its a lot of planning but they are DEF worth it...do we need favors?  does anyone have white x-mas lights i can borrow? and wording for invites? let the planning and suggestions begin...

I have a bagillion white christmas lights (the kind that go on the tree).  You may have to untangle some and the rest are in the boxes.

You can do almost like a potluck style dinner, but a planned one. Create a list of different foods that you would like to have there.  Example:  Cheese and cracker platter, finger sandwiches, Fruit Bowl, etc....  That way it's not just random food there. People who are helping you to plan would be responsible for bringing one or two of the items on the list. YOu can choose a theme: Mexican, Asian, Tea Party foods, etc....  That way the food is completely organized.  You can even have it catered and everyone just splits the cost??You can find some nice favors for cheap, but are still elegant.  I think that would be a really nice touch. How about getting a really nice photo of them and having it blown up with a matting, so that people can sign around it?I wouldn't go overboard with the decorations because the party is about them. How about a candy bar?  That would be really cheap and easy to do.  You could use the vases from Sylvia and put a different type of candy in each one.  Have you chosen a color scheme? You can make simple menus to display on your computer and tie a ribbon and a small flower around them.I'll come up with more ideas, as I LOVE planning parties. =)
