Engagement Photos/Party

We just got engaged in December and have set a July 2013 wedding date due to my busy schedule of school, board exams in 2012, starting a new job ect.  I think it's too early to do anything BIG for our engagement, but I also don't want people to forget that despite our long engagement we are DEFINITELY getting married.  What would be a good time frame for a party?  Or is this out of the question since we'll be having the bridal shower closer to our wedding date?

    We actually just had our engagement party the night he proposed.  It was a suprise that everyone came over.  I think it would be good to have one sooner than later!

    My FI proposed on Dec 6.  We had an engagement party at our home the day after Christmas, mainly so our OOT WP (who were in the area for the holidays) could come!  I would think the engagement party should be closer to the actual / announced engagement and the shower closer to the wedding.  Maybe?
