What's your "first dance" going to be?

Hi Ladies, bored so I thought I'd ask a question...

My FI chose the song "Fly me to the Moon" by ole Blue eyes himself. We have been taking private (secret) dance lessons, and we will be dancing the Foxtrot to it. No one knows :)

What is your first dance song, and are you planning anything special?

We danced to "Everything" by Michael Buble. I wanted to take dance lessons..but it never happened. We practiced a little...but it didn't really help. We had fun though. =)
Good luck!! Hope it all goes well.
  • We're up in the air about music.  I'm not spending the cost of a DJ for 50 or 60 people.  I'm thinking of loading up the iPod and winging it.  I"m all about the winging.  FI wants to do an evolution of dance - we're both 44 and MY body doesn't like to cooperate.  I can white girl stomp and that's about it. LOL!  I want music in the background and if you wanna dance - dance but I don't have anything special picked out.  Etta is my 1st choice if we change our minds.  I'm having a hard time finding other options - why Etta is # 1.

  • We are doing At Last - Martina McBride version, one of my best friends is singing it.  She is amazing!  She gives me goose bumps when she sings.
  • We've picked "Welcome to my world" by Dean Martin.
  • I have no idea what we will dance to.  I like the idea of "At Last" (Etta James version) and it is under consideration.  I have also considered "When I Said I Do" by Clint and Lisa Hartman Black.  We have also tossed around a song that is a little more upbeat.

I think the Foxtrot you are planning sounds wonderful.  I would love to do something like that, but FI is not a big fan of the spotlight.  Even if I could just get him to take two-step lessons...You guys will be fantastic and everyone will enjoy your first dance.

  • I don't know if we'll have any dancing. But if we did, I think I'd do this song. We are both book lovers, and this song has a funny mix of the smarmyness and snarkiness that works for us:

The Book of Love (Peter Gabriel version):

  • And our "first dance" really will be our first dance.  FI doesn't dance!  I love to dance and am very much looking forward to it!
  • My FI has picked the song, did so about a year ago, and is keeping it secret!  We took some dance lessons, will likely take a few prior to the wedding or at least practice at home.  We aren't having dancing at the wedding, but do want to do the traditional first dance, and then if others want to dance so be it.  No DJ of course, just an iPod of fun, favorite music.

We're not having a dance, however my FI and I will be having our one dance together to Matthew West's 'When I say I do'.

  • Haven't nailed it down yet (yikes!  better get to it eh?)

    but I'm tossing around:

"I'm gonna make you love me" by The Jayhawks  LINK

"Can't Resist it" by Lyle Lovett www.youtube.com/watch?v=7hon4rj16TU" target="_blank">LINK

"Is this Love" Bob Marley song - performed by Bob Schneider (can't find a good youtube link for this so here's another beauty by Bob S: link)

And - instead of a DJ - I've asked my besties to help me build an ipod of songs.  Just asked them to send me a cd of like their top 10 wedding/party songs.  Then I'm loading them onto the ipod and will use that for both the wedding reception as well as the AHR in Wisconsin.
  • Wonderful songs and ideas ladies. I wish we could see each other in action.

My FI is 12 years younger and LOVES to dance. He self taught himself in college thinking that would get him more dates. My FI loves the spot light (stand up comic) and during upbeat hip hop songs, will break out into pop and lock and even dives down to splits, jumping back up. It's amazing, people stand in a circle clapping and egging him on. I will be on the sidelines if that happens, lol Let's hope we conquer this Foxtrot, so far, we fumble a lot since I am having a hard time letting him lead, and in that dance, it's a must. Not to mention trusting someone 6 inches shorter and 20 pounds lighter to dip you at the end lol
  • I have no idea what we are going to dance to since we like different music.  I wish I could get him to take lessons!!!  But neither of us really like to be the center of attention and he hates to dance, so probably not a good idea.

The songs I'm thinking about are "Here and Now" by Luther Vandross..."Unforgettable" by Natalie Cole..."Wonderful Tonite"  by Eric Clapton (but I think I may ask the dj to play this as our last dance)...or maybe "the way you look tonite" but the one from Father of the Bride Soundtrack cause it's slower than Frank's version.  Or maybe "Don't want to miss a thing" by Aerosmith...of course there are all my ideas...I'm sure FI will have other ideas!!!

  • Karen--I would love to be a fly on the wall at your wedding.  I think your first dance is going to be spectacular and the rest of the night will be a dance par-tay with your new husband leading the way.  Sounds like fun!!

We will share our first dance to Leonard Cohen's Dance Me to the End of Love or Unchained Melody by The Righteous Brothers.  Plans were to take dance lessons, but that has been overtaken by family crises.  Ugh!  My only hope is that I not be turned in an endless circle.  *sigh*
  • Our current pick is When I said I Do (Clint Black/Lisa Hartman Black). I've always loved that song and I really love that they are still together. FI likes Always and Forever by Heatwave, so we will probably do that as our last dance.

  • @ jcb - I wouldn't use that song either then.  I asked FI what him and the ex had their first dance to, but he can't remember.  I hope it's none of the songs I am considering! LOL

We used kd lang's version of "So in Love" from the red hot + blue album--updated versions of Cole Porter tunes.  That didn't require any special dance moves, which suited my husband well.  We considered U2's "Night and Day," from the same album, which would make a kickin' foxtrot, but that would have required him to learn the foxtrot--not such a popular idea!!

Oh, and we considered, the "Inglorious Basterds" version of the "Cat People" theme, but decided that was a liltle too out there.  Awesome tune, though.
