Tuxes or Suits?

I am up visiting FI in NC for a couple days and I am taking him and some of his groomsmen to look for tuxes tomorrow. My question is my wedding is going to be pretty formal but I am not real big on tuxes. I was thinking of just doing a sleek black suit with a white shirt and a black tie for the guys (which you can rent a black suit from mens warehouse bc i know not all of the guys have one and they obviously would not match) and not sure what for FI. But my girls aren't in a typical bridesmaid dresses its more of a sleek cocktail dress so im not sure. but my wedding is an eveing formal reception. so what do you think? I have asked my family and get mixed reviews. oh and my freaking guest list grew more. we all went out the other night and one of FI's good friends who I love too, was like yeah Allison (his girlfriend) is sooo excited she is invited to the wedding that is all she talks about. blah blah blah. Me and FI are just looking at each other like uh she was not invited not sure where you got that just from your save that date that was addressed only to YOU. But how do we say she cant come. so we had to tack her on to the list and a few more. I proceeded to drink bottles of wine that night so i would not stress out. but good grief wherever you go there is another person, its getting slightly out of control. im going to have to turn into a bridezilla soon with this guest list.

I hear ya on the guest list. Ours grew a lot, but a lot more people said no than we expected to, so we ended up right where we expected to be. And from what you describe, I think those suits would look fine. I dont think you necessarily need tuxes.

I think if you're describing your wedding as formal and it's in the evening, tuxes would look better.  Why don't you like the look of tuxes?

I think you need tuxes or else it might look odd compared to the formality of the wedding. There are really lots of options with the tuxes, I bet you can find something you like. And as far as the guest list, girl put your foot down! The people that think they are invited will realize they aren't when they don't receive an invitation. If someone asks you point blank if they are invited you can tell them you are at capacity with your venue.

We went with a Calvin Klein tux but it looks for like a suit. I don't really like the way tuxes look either.

If it is going to be pretty formal, then tuxes are probably the way to go. We originally thought the black suit route was what we were going to do, but after finding out no one except FI had a black, three button jacket and they would have cost so much to buy (we didn't know they rent them), the guys actually wound up buying tuxes (for $99, shirt and vest not included). I really like them and one of the GM has already worn his for a black tie wedding he had to go to last week.

You've probably already looked, but you can get tuxes that resemble suits. Funny story--my brother's friend asked his groomsmen to just make sure they were wearing a black jacket for his small morning ceremony. We all flew out to California and as my brother got dressed, I noticed his jacket was dark grey and said, "Um, you do know that isn't black, right?" He had no idea, and it was too early to go to a store so we just crossed our fingers that nobody would notice. When we got to the ceremony, I noticed that his OTHER friend also was, in fact, wearing a dark grey jacket. Had no idea. Neither did the groom. No harm, no foul, right? :)
