Doing your own makeup?

I was planning on having my BM and my makeup done professionally.  I just don't know if that's going to be feasable now.  So... if you're doing your makeup on your own, or if you just love makeup help a sistah out. I don't wear makeup on a daily (or even weekly to be honest) basis.  When I do I'm a basic Covergirl liquid base Covergirl pressed powder and a little liner and mascara.  I don't even own lipstick.  I need something that's going to stay all day and look good in picks.  Alot of past knotties swore by Sephora but I don't even know if we have one in our mall.  So, drugstore wise what do you suggest?

Here is my plan for make-up:Moisturizer from Bare MineralsSkin Primer from MACEye Primer from MACBare Minerals concealer, foundation, mineral veil, bronzer and blushBareMineral EyeshadowsLiquid LinerMascaraLipstick MacHoly crap, I just realized I have a lot of money invested in makeup!I would suggest finding some primers for the makeup to stay put better, find some youtube tutorials on how to do beauty make-up/smoky eye or whatever you want to do. You definitely need to do your makeup heavier for the day of than you would for everyday wear. I am the biggest fan of BareMinerals and would also suggest getting the starter kit. You can order online. MAC and Sephora are also online. I personally wouldn't trust my wedding makeup to look great with only drugstore products.

I also don't recommend drugstore makeup in general because it doesn't last.  The one exception I've found is with Covergirl Outlast all day lipcolor (comes with a separate gloss pen that you have to reapply but the color does last for many hours.)I'm also a big fan of  Bare Minerals and the Smashbox primer.  If you have a Sephora they can give you samples to try.

*Possible dumb question alert*If I go to the makeup counter, at say, MAC.. they'll show me all of this stuff and tell me what would be best, right?

Jodi- Yes, they'll do that. What I would do is go to a MAC store during the week when they're not so busy and ask them to do a makeup application for you. Tell them you're trying to pick out your wedding make-up. They'll do it for you and show you how they apply it so you can be duplicate it on your wedding day. The application is "free" but you have to spend $50 on product. Honestly...you would do that anyway so you might as well get a free "how to" session out of them.

Thanks for all of your help.  I used to be really into makeup but I've gotten lazy.  I'm sure FI would like to see me "all done up".  Our dating anniversary is this month maybe I'll go by the MAC place that day so the makeup gets some use.

I spend way too much money at Sephora... so I recommend!!.. 1) Primer (I'm using merle norman but any good one will do) 2) Makeup Forever Liquid Foundation 3) Makeup Forever HD High Definition Powder 4) Eye Primer (I use Mary Kay but again any good one will do) 5) Makeup Forever Aqua Smoky Lash Waterproof Extra Black Mascara (gives great long lashes, love this mascara) I wear bare minerals day-to-day but I cant recommend it for the wedding. I am wearing it with primer today, was only at school for a few days, and Im looking oily and its coming off. The Makeup Forever liquid foundation stays on all day.

I'm planning to do my own as well. I've been collecting bits of knowledge around the internet and on youtube makeup tutorials for a while. Makeup primer is a must. Smashbox and MAC are popular ones but the latest in the makeup buzz is Monistat Chafing Relief Gel. Yes, you read that right. Look it up on google and youtube...it's making quite a stir! From what I've heard you want to avoid any foundation with SPF in it and--brittjoy, I've actually heard to avoid bare mineral for this same reason so you may want to ask your photographer--mineral powder makeup because they cause white shine in pro pics. I've heard a lot of good things about Revlon Colorstay but from what I've seen it has SPF in it so I wouldn't want to risk that. However I've heard that Maybelline Superstay 24Hr works very well and has no SPF so I'm going to give that one a try.  Make sure you use primer on your eyelids so your eyeshadow lasts. And waterproof eyeliner and mascara.

I have heard some people say they don't like Bare Minerals for photography. I have had two photo shoots now wearing it and the first one my photographer actually thought I had a professional do my makeup. It looked great in my photos, but everybody has different skin.

Katie, I've been dying to try Makeup Forever foundation! But there's no Sephora nearby and I don't want to buy the wrong color online. :(As for MAC, most of their products are awesome but all but one of their foundations has SPF in it. Here's info on wearing SPF foundations for weddings:  http://www.weddingaces.com/2009/05/wedding-makeup-avoid-pale-face-in-photos/http://bridalmakeupartists.com/bridal-makeup-artists-do-i-really-need-one.phphttp://make-up-application.suite101.com/article.cfm/wedding_makeup_and_skin_careBrittjoy, that's awesome that the mineral makeup came out so well! Very true about having different skin. Just trial and error most of the time.

Wow... Guess I have a lot of research ahead of me. I didn't even know there was such a thing as "primer" when it came to make up... The whole time I was reading this post I was thinking "Primer- as in paint?" I need to youtube it, "stat".

A primer is definitely a must!  I think that's the key in getting the makeup to last all day.  I'm addicted to watching makeup and hair videos on youtube... lol.  My favorite youtubers are Michellephan, pursebuzz, kissonthechic, kandeejohnson, and proglossip (which is kissonthechic's new channel).  Genki- I hadn't heard about the monistat thing yet so I just looked it up and wow!!!  I'm totally going to try that lol.

One last thing, don't forget about your eyebrows! Tweeze or wax them to perfection then you need to fill them in a little bit for the day of. Once again, I have an eyebrow kit from Bare Minerals, I should look into buying stock in this company :)

Hey, Jodi... Sorry, I've been lax lately and didn't realize you were having a makeup crisis :)Lots of good advice so far, and I agree--typical drugstore brands just WON'T stay on, period. However, Ulta.com has a Smashbox primer set AND free shipping over $25:http://www.ulta.com/ulta/browse/productDetail.jsp?skuId=2210938&productId=xlsImpprod1470034&navAction=push&navCount=1&categoryId=cat1090013cat80045I used that and it was fantastic--lasted all day into the night. Plus I used it during our honeymoon, and it lasted through our hike through the volcanic crater. I think that says something! It's my favorite stuff now. Also, for the color part, I bought a Bobbi Brown palette from bluemercury.com (PIB), though you can also hit up MAC and see what they have. I think Dillards and some Belks also carry Bobbi Brown.Once you experiment and figure out how you want it, there's no reason you can't DIY.

I was also thinking about this some more Jodi, and I could easily say I am using about $400 worth of makeup products for my wedding. I am obviously a person that loves and always wears makeup so I have everything I need. It may be cheaper to just pay for someone to do your makeup instead of buying all new products that you may not use in the future.

After reading all your advice, I ended up at the MAC counter here in Germany this past weekend.  I ended up spending quite a bit of money for my wedding makeup.  I hope I will be able to apply it like the sales rep showed me.I am not much of a make-up wearer either, but I do own some.   I am just not the best at applying it, plus everything I do wear is very natural looking. So, thanks for the tips and advice on the type of makeup to use for the wedding!
A happy newlywed...now time to start a family!
