Wedding dress alterations

I bought my dress at a sample sale, so I already have it and started to do research on alterations. Apparently they can be a lot more expensive than I thought!

Can anyone recommend a good, reasonably priced seamstress? Did most of you just have it altered at the place you bought your gown?

    If you're in Jacksonville, Martha Shump.  She does great work and is also one of the cheapest!

    If you are in Jax then I would second Kappa's rec of Martha Shump. She is very knowledgeable and reasonably priced. However, her personality is a bit acerbic and she doesnt tolerate tardiness at all. Supposedly, if you are 10 minutes late, she will make you reschedule. However, her prices are amazing and she was voted best in Jacksonville for 2009 I believe.

    Also, in catching up on previous posts (had LASIK and thus have not been on the computer), I noticed you bought your dress at Alfred Angelo. I also got my dress from there but I wouldnt rec. using their alterations department. It is very expensive and I heard that they actually send your dress away to be altered. I had a bridesmaids dress altered there and it cost me practically what I am paying Martha for my wedding dress alterations, and she is doing way more!

    Another recommendation for Martha Shump...She did an amazing job on my dress  and was very reasonable. My mom was so impressed that she got her dress altered by her too.

    great thread!  I was going to get mine altered at David's Bridal until recently when I keep hearing horror stories about their prices.

    I also have amazing things to say about Martha.  She is very reasonably priced, easy to work with and she has been very accomadating for me.  I pick my dress up Thursday steamed and ready to go.

    Soooo, how far in advance do you recommend going to Martha? 

    DB told me to come in July for my fitting (wedding in October)

    Martha is popular so she books appointments fast.  I got married in January, and she told me that I had to start my alterations no later than October.

    My wedding is a year away but I'm thinking of going to her in the next month just to make sure I can get her and to get it out of the way!
