Rehearsal Dinner - Long

I have a question about whether or not you all think this is ok. FI's mother passed away in February. It was very unexpected and obviously its one day at a time. She was very adamant about doing a rehearsal dinner (it was going to be lunch actually) even though money was tight for them. However, we hadnt really started doing anything for it. Well a few weeks after the funeral, FIL looked at me and, with sort of a worried look, asked what exactly he was supposed to pay for. I told him dont worry about it, because I knew he didnt know anything about the rehearsal at all and money is obviously tighter now. So I still want (and think its necessary) to have a rehearsal, but it is not in anyone's budget to do a dinner or lunch afterwards. I dont feel right asking my parents to pay for it on top of everything else and Jason and I honestly cannot afford it. Do you think it would be ok to still have a rehearsal and invite everyone to go out with us, but have it be more of a normal night out where everyone pays for themselves?

Sorry, but I don't.  If you're expecting them to go to the rehearsal, you need to provide them with something to eat afterwards at your expense.  They're taking time out of their busy schedule for you.

You could do something pretty casual and cheap.  Order pizza and salad.  Cookout in someone's backyard.  It doesn't have to be expensive at all.

I agree with the navybaby. FI and I are paying for the whole wedding and still haven't decided but its either going to be pizza or make lasagna, salad and bread.

Agree with PPs maybe do pizza or some finger foods from Sams or a cookout. I think we plan on just doing some finger foods and cake. It doesnt have to be expensive.

Ehhh...I would say no...b/c I would feel weird doing that. However...we had friends in a similar situation awhile back. We all went out afterwards & we happily paid for ourselves. These people are your closest friends & probably understand the situation. I doubt they would mind/care...but technically, I guess it is poor ettiquette.

Ditto this, we were actually not planning on having a dinner, which all of my BM, GM were ok with. We all decided last min. to go out to eat and everyone offered to pay for their own meal, however we went for Pizza and it was under $100 so we just picked up the tab. We did have everyone pay for their own alcohol though

Thanks for all of your advice ladies. I think we may go the pizza option and go to Al's pizza by the beach.
