Cost of alterations?

Can anyone give me an idea of how much their alterations cost ? We are getting ready to have that done, and really do not know what to expect. I know we should bring the bustier or bra that my daughter is wearing, and the shoes, but should I be aware of anything else ? And how long before the wedding do you go in for a fitting ? When do you typically get the gown back ?

I had some pretty major alterations done on my dress (sleeves and back added to a strapless dress, seven-point bustle, beading, etc). My alterations came to about $300. I started them two months before my bridal portraits. I'm sure they can be done faster, but I had plenty of time and wanted to do it at a leisurely pace. I'm getting my gown in about a week, which is about two weeks before my bridal portraits.

My alterations were less than $100.  I only had to get a bustle and cups put in.  Those two things were only like $40 together though so I had to pay the pressing fee as well.  My seamstress doesn't charge the pressing fee if you are at $100 or more.  When you go make sure to take all undergarments that will be worn under the gown.  Also make sure you have the day of shoes and petticoat/hoop skirt if one will be worn.  I think I took my dress in sometime in February for my March wedding.  It was done within the week but I had my seamstress keep it for me until the days before the wedding.  After pressing the dress needs to be stored a certain way so that it does get wrinkles, and it would have just taken up too much space at our place.

My alterations were $75 and I got the cups, bustle, and had some things on the dress moved.  There is no pressing fee since I am having them done at the place I purchased the dress.  I just took it in this week for my October wedding.

I don't want to hijack this post, but I had the same question as bustamucho.  Also, can you ladies share where you got your alterations done and if you were happy with their job?  I have no idea where to start.  TIA!
