alterations

ok, I know this topic has been beaten to death on here, but I just called Janet Kirkman and got over-the-phone estimates from her. I think my dress is pretty simple for what I need to have done but I'm still thinking alterations are gonna be ~$200. So... I need some other places to compare with. Does anyone have suggestions other than Janet Kirkman? Has anyone heard of Artful Tailoring in Chandler? What about Danese Creations in Phoenix?

Or... can anyone convince me that $200 is a fair price for any kinda alterations with Janet? :) I still have a few months to decide, but I think it's better to comparison shop now.

Here is what my alterations cost for my ballgown:

    $100 hem
    $25 bust darts
    $50 bustle

I think it really depends on what you are getting done however and how much material your dress has....

What are you getting done?  That could help to get an idea whether its a good price or not!

Ah... so I guess I don't really know a lot about alterations. First, what are bust darts? Second, I would need alterations for the fit around the bodice, the bustle, and most likely the hem too. Janet said for the bustle she charges per point. How many points are there usually in a bustle? Like a French bustle?

I'm already comparison shopping, and I have 8 months to go yet!  LOL

I was looking at this lady here:  http://www.alterationsetc.net/Home_Page.php

She has a full pricing list on her site as well, so you can look and compare to what Janet told you maybe.  I haven't called Janet yet, but was thinking about it!  I actually emailed her, and she said to call...  but then the whole dress switch thing came up for me, so I'm waiting obviously, until the other dress gets here to see how it fits and what it needs and if I love it.  Oy!

Let me know what you decide, I'll be curious!  =)

Bust darts help to make the "bust" part lay flat--mine was gaping a bit--she also had to shorten the straps a tad.  I am assuming by "points" she means buttons?  For example, my bustle had 6 buttons and hooks attached--just for a classic bustle.

I have no idea what bust darts are either. lol. I tried looking on the great Internet and I am still confused. I need mine taken in quite a bit. Does bust dart apply to that? Anyway, good luck! I need to find an alterations person and haven't decided yet.

Bust Darts are short triangle folds that provide space for breasts such that the fabric under the breasts isn't hanging, rather is fitting closer to the wearer.  Also can be done on top of the breasts so there isn't say, a gap when you bend over that gives a straight shot down the dress.  LOL

I know Almond Tree does alterations.  I am going to purchase my gown through them.  I'm having them make my gown a corset back ($100) I have to have the bustle darts, three of them for a french bustle ($15/dart) and I think one more thing.  It was about $200 for all of it.  So about $100 with out corset back.  Something to look into!

I receantly got married and I did the alterations on my dress myself because it's highway robbery what they charge for something that is usually not a difficult fix. What you are actually paying for is the word "wedding," which I'm sure we have all discovered.

I actually do alterations out of my house on the side. I'm a professional seamstress and have a degree in costumes design. Just saying....

I can totally vouch for thechchic8.  She's done alterations for me in the past and everything always looks great!
