Old Gold into New Ring?

Ok so I just read something about a couple who asked family/friends to donate their old gold and they had new rings made from that.  I kinda skimmed through the article but I didn't see any details.  I prob won't go asking my guests to donate their gold but I know my grandma has some she's more than willing to give up and this doesn't seem like such a bad idea...my questions are; has anyone done this- taken old gold pieces and had it made into new rings for you and/or your FI?  Is there a local place that does this or is there a jeweler website I can do some more research?  Also, can they plate yellow gold white- I'm not a huge fan of the yellow gold look but my grams has tons :)  I like this idea for multiple reasons and if it's doable I'd love to hear more about it from anyone who's done it, though about doing it etc.  Details are much appreciated! :)

That definitely sounds interesting! It would be kind of cool to have a bit of your families in your rings.  I have seen advertisements on tv to sell your old gold, but I haven't heard of jewelry reconstruction.  You would need to go to an independent jeweler or blacksmith.  A chain jeweler might do it, but they would charge you a ridiculous amount as a middle man.

I found this interesting thread about recasting gold into new pieces.

It can be done, but again, you need to find someone who does custom work. What happens is they melt it down and form your ring from that. The white gold plating can be applied but they have to have special equipment to do so. ITs not a rhodium plating that they put on it, rather its a magnatic plating type thing, and I cannot remember

Any good jeweler should be able to do this.  My diamond is a family heirloom and it was set in a necklace (with other little diamonds) when my mom gave it to my H.  He took it to a jeweler, who took the big diamond out and made my ring (using the diamond and new gold).  He then took the gold from the necklace and all the extra diamonds and used those materials to make a new necklace for my mom, he was able to recycle all of the left over parts  and make something new for her.

My FI did something similar with my ring.  My parents gifted us my mom's original wedding ring.  We went to a local jeweler here in NYC who took the stone from my mom's ring and put it into a custom setting.  The best part is that we were able to trade in the gold from her ring for 1.5x its worth towards our ring purchase.  I know a lot of jewelers do this and it's a great way to save money on your ring!

To the ladies that did this- any idea where I should go in the Phoenix area?  Recommendations on a jeweler you used?

The jeweler my husband used was in in CA, but any good jeweler can do it.  I am sure someone on here will have a good rec!

We actually found our jeweler searching through Yelp.  It's helpful to see the reviews of other people who've had custom jewelry and trade-ins.
Here's the link to Phoenix jeweler reviews for ya:
