Band v. DJ

Hi So my fiance is insistant that we have a live band. I am for a DJ. I am sure bands do a great job but I really like the idea of how much of a selection and variety a DJ can provide over a band. Anyone have any ideas on how to compromise this or suggestions to make an it an easy decision? thanks

It was simply a financial decision for us. Our DJ came in under $1000. Bands were ranging $5000 and up. It would have been nice, but thre were other elements of the wedding that we weren't willing to sacrifice when a quality DJ can be just as engaging.

We had a live band and loved it - my brothers are both musicians so they dedicated a few songs to us and sat in with the band on those songs which was really special - I think most professional bands can play quite a variety and I know our band said they could learn 8-9 songs if we provided them before the wedding and if there was anything else we wanted that they didn't/couldn't play or thought would sound better as the original version, they played those songs during their breaks through their computer and sound system which worked great for us.Also sometimes I just feel like DJs (especially wedding DJs) are cheesy...I know not all are and some are great, but that's just my personal opinion

I love a good band. If you can afford it, they will be able to play a great variety of music. Most bands let you "crash" a wedding to see them perform live.

I personally have more fun at weddings that have DJs.  there are some good bands out there, but so far any wedding I have been to that has a live band, there is much less dancing for whatever reason than there is with the weddings that have a good DJ.

Our live band was phenomenal, and we had more dancing than I've ever seen at a wedding...  maybe that's just our crowd, but it was ridiculous. If the band is a good quality band, they will be able to play more of a variety.  We also made a mix CD for during the breaks, full of songs that they wouldn't easily be able to play, and it worked out fabulously. But again, it can be a financial decision...  our band was the most reasonably priced I found (a little under 3000 for both dinner and dancing music) and you can get a DJ for much less.  We used Fantasia.
