Name change

Hi ladies, I know this question has been asked a billion times, but I can't seem to find any older posts regarding changing my name.  What do I need to bring into the DMV?  Anyone know if I need my new SS card first? I am just beginning the process and need to do it rather quickly as we have a trip planned for New Years and it is booked with new name.  Just trying to figure out where to start...Help???  TIA ladies!

This is how I did it.  You must have a copy of your marriage certificate (not your marriage license).  If you don't have it is usually available through the county that you were married in 3-4 weeks after the wedding.1. DMV (all I brought was my old driver's license and my marriage cert).  I also changed my registration and car title at this time.2. SS office wanted to see the marriage cert, the old SS card (they kept it), and my new ID.3. Passport wanted the old passport, a form, new pictures, and the marriage cert (they send it back fast).  If your passport is less than one year old, there is no charge to have your named changed.  You must submit new pictures if the passport is more than 90 days old.4. Bank wanted to see the marriage cert, but I've heard this varies and some don't really care.5. Credit cards varied as well.  Some let me do it over the phone.  One required a copy of my new license.  One required a copy of the marriage cert.  It all depends in their policy.6. Insurance policies, work records, medical records, school records all required at least one form of valid ID (with the new name) or marriage cert.HTHI can't think of anything else we changed, aside from our lease, which was easy.  All the utilities had to be changed but those were just phone calls.

I would just look all of these up on google for the correct information. I just did this today, and I did not need my old SS Card to get the new one (I don't know where the old one is) and I also did not have a new id yet (so I used my old drivers licence with the old name) Also for the passport unless you just got yours within a year you do need to pay a renewal fee to change your name on it. And you do not need to mail in the original, but can use a copy of your marriage licence. There is information online for all of these that I would check out before you go!

"Also for the passport unless you just got yours within a year you do need to pay a renewal fee to change your name on it" If the passport is less than one year old you don't have to pay the fee. Anything older than one year you have to fill out a different form (DS-82 if it is older than one year) and pay a renewal fee. If your passport is less than one year old you fill out form DS-5504 and send a certified copy of your marriage cert or an original. As for the new ID and old SS card, the office/agent I went to specifically requested both of these in addition to my marriage cert. I suppose I don't know what would happen if you didn't have them (obviously in 2009's experience says nothing) but if you have them I'd bring them with. Better safe than sorry. I also brought my birth certificate and old passport with me but no one asked to see it.
