i want to cry (dress content)

I had what was supposed to be my final fitting for my dress last night, and when i put the dress on - it was a good 3 - 4 inches TOO SHORT!!!My wedding is 2 weeks away!! I can't wear the shoes i had bought (which i love, i paid $150 for and are non-refundable since i've had them dyed, and had brought with me since my very 1st alteration appointment and was told they were perfect for the dress). The shop told me they would buy me new shoes, but i'm goign to have to end up wearing stupid ballet flats (which do NOT match the dress!), instead of my super sexy and cute bridal shoes that i've had for over a month. Even barefoot,, the dress is too short. and i paid $400 for these damned alterations!this was the first time i've cried over a wedding related topic. :( I ordered this dress last November, it took 9 months to make it, and the dress has basically been the one thing i've been REALLY excited about during the entire process.thanks for listening to (or reading) my vent. :'(

ugh marci i'm sorry!!!! did the shop shorten it?  can they let it down some?  That happened to me but she was able to let the hem down so it worked out...maybe she can do that?  are there multiple layers?
  • edited December 2011
Oh my goodness, I can feel your pain and frustration.I hope that you will find a solution to give you some sense of peace.  How did this happen?  Does the shop have a good explanation? They asked you to pay for this error? Is there another dress they could GIVE you for compensation?

That's too bad! I don't understand...Did they JUST shorten it before this fitting or was it too short all along and you never tried it on with your shoes? If they ordered the wrong length or screwed up a hem job, you should definitely ask for compensation. You were promised a dress that would be the correct length, and they did not deliver that product. I would tell them that the dress is not acceptable in it's current state, and ask what they can do for you. And you should DEFINITELY not pay for alterations. That is ridiculous. An offer of free shoes is a freaking joke. Can I ask where you got your dress from?

Betsy - the dress is only 2 layers, the top being a very intricate lace. So no, they can't take the hem down. The stupid seamstress told me it was because i lost "too much weight."A - i have lost ZERO weight. Since i was 16, i fluctuate 5 lbs MAX in both directions.B - how would me loosing weight deal with the length of the dress????!!!!!I cannot get a new dress, my wedding is 2 weeks away. This is literally the dress of my dreams, and it's from Spain, took 9 months to make, and is now discontinued. They said they'll "try to figure something out." I'm going back there in a few days to see what they've done, and they better have figured something out, without ruining the overall look of the dress. I went home to my fiance in tears, and he's so sweet, he told me i could just wear my PJ's and he'd be happy, just as long as we were getting married.Should have eloped.

oh yeah, i've had these shoes during the whole alterations process, and was told they were "perfect". the sad thing is, i've RAVED about this shop, and they truly have been wonderful... until now. It's A'lamour in Barrington.

Marci - I didn't see anythign in your bio about your dress - what's the bottom of your dress made out of?  Lace? Chiffon? Silk?   I'm wondering if extra material that closely matches is (lace would be hard) could be purchased and sewn in under the top layer of yorr dress, almost like a panel at the bottom, but I think it would only work with certain materials and styles.  They've got to be able to do something.

this is my dress. You can see that the lace overlays the organza, and the scalloped lace is supposed to touch my toes.http://www.preownedweddingdresses.com/dresses/4625/Pronovias-Ideal--Gabriella-style--Size-6.html
  • edited December 2011
the way it is now, you can see my fu**ing ankles.
  • edited December 2011
what if they organza was longer than the lace? not ideal but i really don't think you'd notice....did the b*tch shorten it and then take it in up top? is so she's an idiot!!!

So sorry to hear about this. I would be a mess too if I were in your shoes. How dare the seamstress say that bc of you losing weight your dress is too short! She should have owned up to the goof up. They should eat the cost of alterations and cost of shoes for this. I think the exteded lace panel is somewhat of a good idea. But it depends on the dress. By the way your FI saying the PJ this is super cute.

It's beauuuutiful - i wonder if they could shorten the train a little and add the extra material from that to the front, or like pp mentioned, let the organza down a little.

i would demand that you had a perfect dress and they ruined it and need to refund 100% of the cost. show them the photo of how the dress goes on the woman in the link noting that this is how the dress is meant to be and you asked for it at floor length not four inches up from it. i would take this to small claims court if i have to. i would also look for off-the-rack dresses that need no alterations. i would not let my ankles show at my wedding (it already passed, but just as an example)

I knew I had seen this happen on "Say yes to the Dress." Here is a link to the video. The shop got extra fabric from the dress manufacturer and added a ruffle of extra length to the bottom. http://tinyurl.com/ygloucx So something can be done... Good luck. And try not to stress out too much!!

the most logical thing to do would to order more fabric, but the maufacturer is in Spain...by the time it comes in and is added to the dress, it'll be too late. i hope i'm not just overreacting and when i go in next week it'll all be fixed. ::Fingers crossed::

if adding extra fabric is an option the dress shop needs to order it now and have it overnighted and they need to eat the incredibly expensive cost of that.

I ordered a very intricate lace Lazaro dress for my wedding. http://www.jlmcouture.com/Lazaro/Bridal/Additional/Style-3818I bought it during a trunk show, so Lazaro HIMSELF measured me hollow-to-hem so that it would come in the perfect length and so I wouldn't have to shorten the dress.  The dress came in 2 months before my wedding. When I went in to try it on, it was 3 inches too short and could see my feet.  They ordered me a new dress.  It took Lazaro 3 days to make a new dress with the appropriate length.  The reason they tell you it takes 9 months to make a dress is becuase tthere is a waiting listing, but in an "emergency" situation like mine, I got bumped to the top and I got my new dress in a week. The salon probably doesn't want to order you a new dress because if they messed up on alterations, they'll have to pay for 2 dresses. If absolutely nothing can be done, then I would demand that they order you a new dress immediately.I'm so sorry you are dealing with this.

That's awful!!! One thing I am confused about is did you ever try on the dress and it was a good length? Was it always too short or did you just find out at this fitting? I agree with everyone else that you deserve a perfect dress rush delivered to you, compliments of the shop.

Oh my gosh. I am so sorry that happened to you. I loved my experience at A L'Amour and now I'm worrying about my alterations to the bust...Seriously, demand money back, threaten Better Business Bureau, call the manager... anything. They didn't still charge you for the alterations, did they? Can you post a picture?

the length was perfectly fine at the last 2 alteration appointments. i had already paid for alterations, but am demanding a refund. With the dress, veil, and alterations, i've paid that shop $2000. The shoes were not bought there (i got them at Weddings, Etc.), and it's not their fault that this place made a mistake. Hopefully i can get someone to buy the shoes off of me, even if for only 1/2 price. (ANyone need wedding shoes?!?! haha)

see if the length was fine before, that makes me think she altered the bust or other parts AFTER she did the length...that's a huge no-no....the length should be the very last thing that's altered once you're sure the rest of the dress fits.

So did you ask her to shorten it after your first few fittings? It seems really weird that "all of a sudden" she thought it needed to be shortened 3 inches. Seriously, they should be able to fix this for you. If it is that important to you, which it should be, then don't take no for an answer. Their "solution" is simply not acceptable. I mean honestly, they can get you a dress in a week. And they should. If they tall you otherwise they aren't trying hard enough.

they ruined your dress. they should not only refund their cost of labor, but refund the full cost of the dress since they damaged it.

I think some PP mentioned this, but what about a ruffle that comes out from underneath the dress? I am sure not ideal and what you originally wanted, but it could look really pretty. I have seen a lot of dresses with that ruffle coming out from the bottom and I think it looks cool. Just an idea in case they don't come up with anything else! Sorry, this is such an awful situation!

Oh my god! I just feel so horrible for you. That is awful. I agree with everyone here that it should be this store's top priority to get you a new dress or fix their mistake in time for your wedding and at their expense. Good luck! And your FI sounds like he's going to make a wonderful husband!

I'm so sorry that you're going through this.  A good alterations person should be able to fix this somehow.  They may not be able to take down the hem, but there has to be another fix.  I'd recommend my lady to you, but she's going for surgery tomorrow. Also, PP was right, losing weight would make the dress longer, not shorter, so your alterations person is lying to you. Hope it all works out.  Please come back and post an update after your next appointment.

I am so so sorry this is happening to you!  Has the salon or you tried contacting the designer directly?  I have seen similar things before where the girls were able to resolve the issue with the designer directly as pp said.

That's awful!  Like someone else said, blaming it on you for "losing too much weight" sounds like b.s. to me- losing weight would make it longer because there's less to fill it out, so it hangs down. They either need to fix (at no additional cost) it so you can't see your shoes, in a way that you like, or they need to buy a whole new dress.Another option, if you want to wear those cute shoes- what about a second dress to wear to the reception(make them pay for it!) that's designed to be short and then you can really show off those shoes?

I'm so sorry this is happening to you! I can't even imagine what I would do in this situation.  I hope that you are atleast refunded all of your money.  It would be ridiculous for you to pay for something that they just completely screwed up on!! I hope that it all works out for you!!
