Hotel Blocks

So I need to start looking at hotels for some out of town guests. But I was wondering how you figure out how many rooms to block off?I only know maybe 4 or 5 rooms will be booked for sure. But we have out of town guests, and our wedding is in the burbs and most people are from Chicago.

We had a couple different hotels and they each worked a different way, but with all of them we wanted to make sure we weren't responsible for any of the rooms we blocked in case they didn't get booked.  One place just gave us a rate and said as long as they book by a certain date and they have availability, they would honor that rate so we didn't need to worry about # of rooms.  Another blocked 10 rooms at our rate (again we weren't responsible if all 10 didn't get booked) and they said they'd let us know when those 10 got booked so we could block more if we needed to.

I found pretty similar info to what PP said. It depended on the hotel, but most would block a small number (10 each night) without me guaranteeing anything. As they fill up, they will add more rooms if we need them. The only hotel I used that I had to guarantee rooms, we are staying at as well as our family and we only had to book 5 rooms and that was done pretty easily. If you want a good site hotelplanner.com is great. It manages bids and sends our an "RFP" ish thing to a bunch of hotels in your area. The nice thing is none of them get your email address:)
