Pay for makeup trial?

I'm starting to contact makeup artists to do trials.  Did you ladies have to pay for your makeup trials?  If so, what was the price range?

I was surprised at first when she said there was a $75 fee, but I'm new to all of this so I wasn't sure if that was the norm.

That sounds like what I have seen as well. :(

Yep...Some of them "build-in" their cost into their package price. For example, $175 for the bridal day of make-up and the trial. Your costs sounds just about right. Mine was a tad bit more, but it depends on the vendor.

We have contacted some shops---I think Sephora was one of them----where they do charge for the trial but then you are able to apply that money toward the  purchase of products.

I had 2 trials (with 2 different artists) - First artist $50 for hair and makup, and she came to me.  Second artist $100 for hair and makeup, and I had to go to them.

My makeup artist charged $30 for a trial if you book your wedding with her and $60 if you don't.

I had my hair/makeup trial last week.  They charged $75 but came to my home.  I was not satisfied with the results.  They said they would give me a "complimentary upgrade" to a better stylist but I'm not sure if I'll have to pay another $75 for that trial.  If so, I will ask them to apply that to the wedding day if I choose to go with them.  At least now I can articulate what I want/don't want, can ask certain questions I hadn't thought of before, and see how their approach differs from the first stylist.  (does she ask questions about you so style/makeup are right for you?  if not, that's a red flag in my book)

Another question for you ladies - do you mind telling me how much your makeup artists charged for the day of?  (You can PM me if you don't want to share publicly). I see that some charge per person and some charge per hour.  I'm still in sticker shock over some of the day-of prices I've seen as well.
