Unhappy couples at Art Institute over exhibit - whose side are you on?

I just read this article in the Trib.  I'm torn on whose side I'm on - on one hand you know that with an art hall you might get some pieces of art that doesn't go with your overall aesthetic.

But with an exhibit that is so "colorful" and large warranting the Art Institute to write letters to the couples letting them know about the exhibit, I wonder if it's more than what couples would consider reasonable.  Especially if it is obstructing views and is an eyesore compared to the stark minimalist vibe the terrace has.

The rental prices aren't cheap either so wanted to see what your thoughts were.

My friend was married at the MCA a few years ago.  Behind a somewhat secluded wall was a 28 foot tall painting of a couple having sex.  I'm talking a 6 foot tall penis entering into a vagina.   It was quite offensive and I don’t think they knew it was going to be there – but they didn’t seem to care.  Not sure how I would feel if my venue did this – but art is interpreted in many ways so there is always going to be a risk

I personally wouldn't mind the art work. I think it's interesting but my FI and I are big art people.

I just feel like couples need to understand that even though this is where they are having their wedding, it's still an operating art museum and exhibits will come and go. You can't not display any art all summer because a handful of people won't like it. I'd say roll with it. I can't imagine that their guests are going to be that taken back by a rainbow colored piece of art or that it's going to ruin all their photos.

From the pictures in the Red Eye, it looks like you can still see the skyline, so the view isn't completely ruined.

I understand that it's not how they want it, but like you all said - it's an art museum, you can't control what exhibit will be where!

There has to be a clause in their agreement that would allow for this.  We can't control when a hotel or banquet hall decides to redecorate!

I am on the side of the museum. If you want a stark modern space without art there are plenty of other places you can rent around here like the Aerie loft or Prarie Production. Unless the contract guarantees unobstructed views and blank walls then they have no arguement and the brides are just being fussy because they think the world revolves around them.
