Booking venue--deposit questions

We are considering a fall 2012 wedding and don't have a specific type of venue in mind yet. I'm wondering how deposits work - if you put a deposit down on a venue and then change your mind, can you get your full deposit back by a certain date? Or do you only get a portion of it back? Or is it different for different venues?

Re: Booking venue--deposit questions

  • I'm not sure exactly. I think it probably depends on how far out you are away from your wedding. I know we can get different percentages back depending on how far out we cancel but can't get it all back. For now I'd just make a list of possible venues and go visit a few different types. That might help you narrow down what type you want and then you can go from there. We visited a lot of places before we put down a deposit so you can always wait on that until you are more sure.

  • Our venue is a restaurant. In our case, if we decide to cancel, and it is 6 months or more in advance of the date, then we get the full deposit back. After that, we get a pro-rated amount back, depending on how close to the date we cancel. Not that we're planning to cancel, it's just good to know! Every venue will have its own policy, so make sure you ask about it when you start setting up appointments.
  • It depends on the venue. Some won't give any of your deposit back, some will prorate it, and some will give the full amount back if they are able to fill your spot with another event.
  • Our original deposit was $1500 to book and this month (8 months before) we need to make another 3500 and our contract states that if we were to cancel within 8 months of our wedding date we would owe the hall 6 or 8 grand. but if we cancelled before we would just loose our original deposit.

As the PP's stated it all depends on the hall
  • Agreed with Coney.  It depends on each venue's contracts, so read carefully!
  • I think it depends on the hall. I think there is now wedding insurance since so many venues closed last year.
