Rant: my dress is too big... how do I get over it?

I just got my dress back from being cleaned, and the wedding is in a week. The dry cleaner did an okay job (he missed a few marks on the train, but the bulk of it looks great), but I just tried it on and discovered that it is a little too big. I didn't try it on when I picked it up from getting altered because I'm very non-confrontational and they had it all wrapped up for me to go. Now I really wish I had insisted. I might have lost a couple pounds since my fitting, but not enough to make a difference in the bust, which is where the problem is. It now sits lower on my back, which makes it drag a bit on the floor. I can wear higher shoes, so that's okay, but since it doesn't fit snugly in the bust I feel like my boobs will pop out of it if I move the wrong way.

Logically I know it's not so bad that anyone else will notice, but after paying $300 to have my wedding dress altered to fit me perfectly, I'm really upset that it doesn't. When I buy clothes off the rack they never fit me properly, so I always feel a little frumpy. I was really looking forward to once in my life wearing something that really shows off my body.

My wedding is in a week. I have no time or money to do anything about this. How can I just get passed it and feel beautiful on my day? Did any of you have similar issues with your wedding gowns?

    Oh, Raeyn - I'm sorry!
Why don't you try calling where you had it altered, and nicely explain the situation?  You don't need to be confrontational, but you paid for a service that wasn't explicitly met.  See if they can make the small tweaks (and stress that they're small); they SHOULD do it for free.
Or are you wearing a bra under?  If so, can you get a padded one?

I agree with Noran. They shouldn't charge you extra if it doesn't fit you like it should and it may be a quick fix. I would call them today and see if you can drop it off. I always use flattery first when I don't want to be confrontational like "I came home and opened the box and I love the way you altered the _____, unfortunatly the bust is a bit too big, when can I drop it off so that you guys would have enough time to fix it by my wedding." That way you're being more directive too and not really asking just telling them to do it. IMO
The bra is a good idea too

Thanks ladies. Unfortunately I can't wear a bra with it, but I just talked to my mom and she suggested that I shorten the halter strap a bit. That seems to help, and it's an easy thing for me to fix. My mom also pointed out that part of the problem could be that this is a different time of the month for me than when I had my fitting, so my boobs really are smaller than they were. With any luck they'll be a little fuller next weekend.

I freaked out, but I tried it on again while talking to my mom on the phone and I feel a little better now. I don't think I'm going to take it back to the bridal salon because the thought of talking to them stresses me out more than my dress being a bit too big (yes, I know I'm ridiculous). I just posted a couple photos in my bio. It doesn't show off quite how skinny I am like I was hoping, but I think it looks okay.

Aw, sorry about that! I agree with PP, call right away, they should fix it no problem and they have time. But I guess if it could possibly fit next week maybe you dont want to? My seamstress did mention the factor you mentioned about it being a different time of month, lol. So much to plan for! :)

If you are even the slightest bit unsettled by the fit you need to call and tell them and have them schedule you to come in.  I'm really not sure why your non-confrontational nature is an issue here; most seamstresses will INSIST that you try it on (final fitting) before you leave.  You paid these people to do a job and even though you should've insisted on trying it on, it is still their responsibility to see that it fits properly.

This really isn't something you need to be getting over.  Take the steps required to ensure the work is done properly so you feel comfortable.

Raeyn-I'm so sorry you feel your dress isn't perfect.  Like all the PP, I would suggest you call the salon, but in the end you need to do what you are comfortable with.

I just looked at your bio, and I thought it looked amazing!  It is a beautiful dress and you wear that style really well.  If you feel shortening the halter straps will help, then go for it.  Also, how snug is it under the bust?  Can you tack in a push-up pad under each breast to help enhance their look? ;-)  You wouldn't need to sew them in completely, just 2 or 3 tacks above and below.  With the lining inside, you shouldn't be able to see the tacks.  That's basically what my seamstress did for my dress.

You know, my dress was also a trumpet style, but it was strapless.  It did fit pretty perfectly, but I still found my boobs would "fall" a little bit depending on my posture.  I would lift them when people weren't looking...haha, and just concentrate on standing really tall on proud.  I think without a bra, we all risk our boobs "falling" a little bit.  I don't know what other word to use then falling.  lol.

Also-while I thought it fit pretty perfectly, it did "wrinkle" right under the bust a lot.  It was probably the boning and such, or maybe it was a tad too snug there and the fabric pulled funny.  It wasn't horrible in the end, but  I don't see that happening on your dress.  Everything lays very smoothly.

Again, I'm so sorry you are disappointed with your dress a week before your wedding.  Do whatever you can to help yourself feel like it is perfect, you will look stunning no matter what, and even though you may not feel you look as skinny as you are, you know whats underneath. ;-)  Sometimes that little secret is all we need to make us feel sexy and fabulous.

I just looked at the pictures, and it's STUNNING.  Really, truly.  Shorten the halter if that makes you feel better, but if you leave it as it is it's perfect, too!
Only one more week and it's all over! Wink

Thanks for being so supportive, everyone. The photo I took is with the halter strap already shortened a bit. Unfortunately I don't think I can add anything to the bust because the seamstress put bra cups in and they convinced me to go for more padding than I otherwise would have. Any more and I think it would look a little ridiculous.

But it's fine. I've ordered new shoes that will arrive Monday so that will take care of the length issue, and I'm sure no one else will notice that it's a little loose in the bust.
