How far in advanced should we book a venue.? Our projected wedding date is April 2011.

I just started planning, but I'm looking for Aug-Oct 2011 and it seems like places are booking pretty quick.  I think it's safe for you to start booking a location now if you find one you like!

Depends on where you are getting married.

If it's downtown, you should have booked in April of 2010.

I called in April for my summer 2011 wedding, and there were only THREE 3:00pm time/dates left at my church.

Book now, as is you may be too late. However it is still sort of off season so that may save you. I just book my wedding for next June in July this year and I was soooo lucky I got my date.

I agree you should have booked at least 1 year in advance for the best spots.  Also, is you are getting married at a church, you mught not get it...I know my church was booked 18 months in advance.  We had our reception at Brookfield Zoo in 3 weeks ago saturday and we booked 18 months in advance and a few later they were booked.

My wedding is May 2011, and when we booked in April 2010, there were a few places that were already booked for our date. If you don't have a particular place in mind and look in the suburbs too there might be some venues that still have dates open.

I would suggest booking right away.  When they ask you the number of guests you want to guarantee for the wedding, give them the lowest number they will accept.

For instance, we thought 175-200 people would attend, so we guaranteed 175.  You can always add more, but if less people attend, you are still stuck with whatever you guaranteed.

I would book your venues, photographer, and any other vendors that are high priority ASAP.  Also, some dress designers have a very large lead time with their gowns, so I would start looking at dresses soon too.

Thanks everyone. I found my dress already, thank god! But i guess its unanimous that we shoud book as soon as we can, to ensure the day that we want.Wink

It's horribly annoying how far in advance you have to book. It seems unnecessary but so many people book a year or more in advance, and you end up competing for venues. As soon as you have an idea of where you want your ceremony/reception, you should book it. Everything else falls into place after that. Good luck!
