I had a great time DJing for Erica and DJ’s Wedding Reception last Saturday (April 30th). The couple, who is originally from Virginia got married at Trinity United Church in Chicago and had their reception at DiNolfo's Banquets in Homer Glen, IL. The banquet hall was great with a grand staircase built into the room where the wedding party processed into the reception.
I arrived more then an hour early and made sure the acoustics in the room were just right. I got started at 6:30pm playing the cocktail music that I worked with the couple to create about a month prior to the event. This was a mix of R&B from artists like: Brian McKnight, Lauryn Hill, Robin Thicke, Maxwell, Babyface and Kem. When the couple's wedding coordinator signaled to me that the wedding party was ready to enter, I got on the mic and began introducing them.
The parents wanted to enter to James Brown's "I Feel Good". This got everyone's attention and was a great way to kick off the proceedings. The wedding party entered to T.I.s "Bring Em Out" which got everyone ready for the party to come. The couple wanted to enter to the Chicago Bulls Theme song which put a great spirit of expectation in the air and gave the room a sprited Chicago feeling.
After the entrance of the wedding party, the couple went right to cutting the cake to R. Kelly's "Happy People". After prayer, I started dinner music which was a mix of R&B and Gospel from artists like: Luther Vandross, Jaheim, Ne-Yo, Alicia Keys, Sade, Hezekiah Walker, and Richard Smallwood.
After a toast the couple had a beautiful first dance to "Just the Two of Us" by Bill Withers and Grover Washington Jr.
The Groom was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity so they offered a special tribute to the couple before much "steppin" later on in the evening. After the whole place got up and did the Cupid Shuffle, we got the party started for the next couple hours with some Old-School House, Disco and Dancehall mixed with Hip Hop from Lil Jon, Whiz Khalifah, Chris Brown, Busta Rhymes, ODB and more. The Alpha brothers also performed a memorable step show to Mobb Deep’s “Quiet Storm” then everyone got funky and did an old-school Soul Train line to James Brown's "The Payback".
I ended with a 30 minute set of Michael Jackson, Prince and Cameo that really sweetened the evening. Everyone had a crazy night that I won't forget.
