I've had friends that used them and the pics were fine. Their biggest frustration was being unsure which of the associates would actually photograph the wedding.

I had a freind book them and paid extra for a certain photographer and they ended up sending someone other than who they paid for. The photos we're ok, nothing really great.

I agree, make sure you always meet the actual photographer before hand so you can atleast feel comfortable with them.  Hope this helps.

Going with a big studio is just like dealing with most big companies.  It's factory style service.  You're just a number.  You may or may not get a decent photographer.  You'll be shown photographers "portfolios" which is basically a small collection of their best work from multiple weddings, you may or may not get a chance to meet the person who is shooting your wedding, most of your communication with the studio will be with a sales rep.  So may reasons not to go with a big studio.  My suggestion is skip the Fox studios, the Bellas, George Street, Essence, etc.. and find a talented independant photographer.  The big studios may be able to undercut the independants on the initial package price.  But in the end, you're really not getting more for your money.  Hire someone who you can meet before the wedding, someone who works for themselves and therefore has a greater interest in keeping you happy.  Someone who takes pride in their work and values their clients.  You should be able to ask a photographer to show you complete weddings, from start to finish so you can see how they handle the whole day, their consistency, not just the best 10 photos from that wedding.  It's a big investment.  If it's not that important, then hire a student from Craigslist.  But if your photography is important, talk to independant photographers.  With the economy being bad now, you may find that they're willing to work with your budget.  Find someone whose work you absolutely love, then deal.  I'm not as savvy as my sister.  I didn't haggle but my sister got an awesome photographer for her wedding and ended up getting around $500 off her package.  I've seen at least 6 or 7 friends' wedding pictures since my own wedding.  Unfortunately, the ones who went with big studios ended up with mediocre photos.  Keep looking. Lots of talent in this city.
