Honeymooning in Chicago

Hi girls, I'm from Mpls/St Paul and we're getting married there in July but doing our mini-moon in Chicago. Any recommendations on places to stay and places to visit? We're for sure doing Six Flags one day - is there a decent hotel nearby? And where should we stay in the city if we want to be able to walk to a lot of places like Mil. Park and such? Are there any fun events going on the second week of July?   TIA!!!

    Congrats!
Chicago is a great city  - you won't suffer from a lack of things to do!

There are tons of downtown hotels, not sure what your budget is, but I've stayed at the Inn of Chicago - it's in Streeterville neighborhood, right off of Michigan Ave.  Close to Navy Pier and easy to walk (or bus) down to Millenium Park.  There's also a hampton Inn right on Grand Ave. that is next door to the Grand el stop, so also a great location.  If you want more fancy, then the sky is the limit downtown!

Check out metromix.com for a calendar of events - there will be at least one festival while you're here.  Yelp is also a great resource for recommendations on hotels and restaurants.

I would recommend that you go on an architecture tour (via boat) - it's a great way to see the city!

I would recommend you check out some comedy - you can do Giordano's pizza and then walk down the street to Comedy Sportz - or hit up Old Town and see a Second City show.

As for Six Flags, it's definitely not close to downtown - about an hour away in good traffic.  Not sure if you are driving or flying here - but there are tons of hotels around Six Flags too - might be a good first or last day event if you're driving.

Hope this helps!  No matter what you'll have fun!  Congrats

How are you getting here?  If you're flying, are you renting a car?

I just wanted to double check that you know Six Flags is in Gurnee, which is a suburb that typically takes 40min-1hr to get to from downtown. Unfortunately there's not really any easy way to get from downtown to Six Flags via public transit.  However, I'm not sure if shuttles from hotels or somethign go there.

There are several hotels in Gurnee area.

There are fireworks at Navy Pier Wednesdays at 9:30pm and Saturdays at 10:15pm

The Field Museum is easy to get to and is free on Monday, July 11th.  It's one of my fav museums in the city.

You may also want to start looking at Chicago Groupons!  You can always post on here or look on Yelp.com if a place comes up that you think sounds good for reviews

Agree with PP on metromix - lots of info there!

Not sure what your budget is , but The Renaissance Blackstone Chicago Hotel is one I have staye at before downtown and is really nice! It is close to Buckingham Fountain and about a 20 minute walk to Navy Pier. You will find plenty to do!! :)

The Chicago boat tours are always a blast, Navy Pier is a must. Also, if you want a very elegant with a great view of the city I suggest The Signature Room at the 95th floor of the Hancock tower. Also, Smith & Wollensky's is a great steakhouse right near the lake. I've stayed at the Hilton on the Mag Mile and it has the best beds I have ever slept in. Enjoy, Chicago will not disappoint you if you do your research! Wink

Try the Best Western River North. We just had some friends stay there for a few days after our wedding and they loved the location...short walk to lots of shopping and Michigan Ave.,tons of restaurants and Navy Pier. They had a nice indoor pool with an outside deck and If you are driving, they are the only hotel in the city with free parking.
I agree that the architecture tour by boat is a must and so is teh chicago groupon...there is a seway tour on there now that might be fun. There are so many things to do in Chicago that you might want to save Great America for your next trip.
    Have fun!

Grab a drink at the top of the John Hancock! Beautiful view, very romantic! No reservations needed for a drink.
