Help finding Catholic Church that doesn't require you to be a current parishoner

Hello!  This is my first forum post ever!  I'm running into a snafu with wedding planning and was hoping someone in this online community could help.  My fiance is Catholic, and it's very important to him that the wedding take place in a Catholic Church, however, he doesn't currently belong to a parish (while I'm not Catholic, that hasn't been the big problem).  We are looking at having our wedding either at Gibson's or Salvatore's, but we haven't been able to locate a pretty church within walking distance that will allow us to set a date without being current parishoners.

Does anyone have any tips/suggestions for Catholic churches in those neighborhoods that might let us set a date without being current parishoners?

Many thanks!!!
Allison

  • I think that it is more of a diocese rule.  There are some exceptions.  For example, we're getting married at our college chapel (a Catholic college) but we had to get a letter from one of our parishes saying that it was ok.  The idea is to encourage couples to celebrate their wedding within their supportive community (parish).  You would have to find a chapel or parish that would be ok with a dispensation from your FI's (or his family's) current parish.  Now where one would be.... not so sure about that one.  If you have any ties to DePaul, their chapel may be available to you, but you usually have to have gone to or have family who works at the school.  Not too much to go on, but I hope it helps a little.  Congrats and welcome to the boards!

  • I know Old St. Pats does not require you to be a member. We are getting married there and are not parishoners.

I have two suggestions for you, both allow non-parishners...

Assumption Church  (http://assumption-chgo.org/) which is in the River Northish area (its near the merchandise mart) - there is a mortons relatively close by.

Holy Family -( http://www.holyfamilychicago.org/)  this chuch is in the Little Italy neighborhood & I got married there. It is sa huge, old cathedral (actually the 2nd oldest church in chicago) - it's gorgeous, hoever it would not be walking distance
  • I think St Clements which is in Lincoln Park does not require you to be a parishoner but be prepared to pay higher fees at any church you find.
  • St. Clements does require you belong to the parish. We are members of the church.

Holy Family is a beautiful church.
  • St. Michael in Old Town does not require you to be a parishoner!
  • My gf got married at Old St. Pat's and they were not parishoners.  They book fast though.
