Wanna use a realtor? Mine took me around to look at places to rent the year before we bought? I've also had semi-good luck just walking around neighborhoods that I like. That's how I found my the second place I lived in the city.

We used @properties for our apartment.  They have a website set up where the agent sends you property listings before you go out and you can look at them and say yes, no or maybe, so that you're not getting dragged to places you don't even want to look at in the first place.   The guy we met with was really nice - PM me if you want his name!

We've used a family friend from @properties as well, but unfortunately nothing panned out.

We found our current place via Chicago Apartment Finders.

I'd check on Chicago Reader's website also!

I know you said not CL, but that is how I've found all my apartments. :) There is a new website domu.com I think (I see ads on cta for it all the time) . . . you could try that too.

We used Rent Proactive for our recent place (ask for Oscar, he's FAB!)

That said, DH and I live in Wrigleyville, and I believe the top floor apartment in the house is available for rent! I know they take dogs cuz the peeps below us have a super awesome big dog of some sort. Pretty sure his name is Pickle.

Aside from that, I would just walk around up here, I have seen TONS of for rent signs going up recently around us.

    LIB!

I live and work in the areas you're talking about and am a realtor. I actually just had a client sign a lease today on a new condo in Lincoln Park. If you're looking for some help feel free to email me Katie919@gmail.com...I might be able to help point you inthe right direction for your new place

I had found my place by going to Apartment People (on Broadway).  They actually drove me to the places and showed me around.
