we finally got our marriage license!/ lawyer

in the mail today.  And I think I might have inadvertently got a "wifey" cut this weekend - it ended up shorter than I expected, but oh well.  I'll try to PIP like Mariko did!Now the whole mess of petitioning the court to change my first name.  Yuck - I even have to publish in a local paper 4 weeks in a row my new proposed name so that anyone could object.  As if.  No one cares! Background:  You know how I was ejenjoo?  E__ is my first name, a korean name, that has gotten super-annoying.  Like when I call verizon or any company, and they want to verify who is calling. The thing is, because people have such a hard time pronouncing it, I feel like if I pronounce it correctly, they might not know what I'm talking about.  The phonetic spelling of it versus how it is pronounced is sort of different.  I almost feel compelled to say it the "American" way so that ppl will understand.  And I hate hate hate when people ask how it's pronounced, because it's basically impossible to pronounce correctly if you have an American English palette - there is a combo soft g/k sound that people can't pronounce.  I just hate having that conversation now like hundreds of times by now.Eek, I've been rambling - to get to my point, any lawyers out there?  I don't want to change my name with DMV, SS, etc., once because now my name is E. Jen K___, and then have to change it again when I get it changed it to Jennifer Joo K___ (the way I want it).I filled out the court forms with my maiden name - I'm wondering if I could petition to go from E.J.J. to J.J.K.  Such a yucky mess, and it's going to cost at least $350 plus cost of publishing in paper.sorry for rambling!  I'll let you know once my name is what I want it to be!

You have to post in the local newspaper to see if anyone objects????  That's ridiculous.  Why should they have any say over what your name is?  It's not like you are trying to change it to something completely different... it's your middle name!  So weird... well congratulations on getting your marriage license!!!  And good luck with the name change.  Oh and I'm expecting to see the wifey cut pictures.  :)

I should apologize, I am knotting after a few drinks...  Wait! WTF?  Do you have to petition like that in every state?  WHO would object, I would think if anyone it would be your mom or someone crazy and personally I don't think they should get to choose. My legal name is Mary Elizabeth ____, but I have always been called Beth.  I have had to do the same explaining all my life about why I go by Beth.  It doesn't seem too confusing since there is no pronunciation issue, but it is still irritating.  By the time I got to college I just gave up on telling people and when people called me Mary, I knew they didn't really know me or it was a telemarketer.  When we get married I wanted to just legally change it to Beth ____.  I didn't think I would have to do anything in the paper though!  I guess I should look into this.Jen - I feel your pain!  Your name issue seems SO much more confusing than mine.

OMG!!!  I will have the exact same problem.  My legal name is a Chinese name and I was planning on changing it legally to Stacy when i get married.  Oh NO!!! Sounds like it's gonna be a pain.  Let me know how it goes.  I know what you mean about people completely butchering your name and always asking how it should be pronounced.  it's so irritating!

What a PITA!Yeah, you actually can't declare a new first name when you sign the marriage license after getting married.  You can only change your middle and last names and there are even restrictions on what you can change those names to.

What a pain!  I looked into changing my last name in CA because I changed my mind about my last name after the wedding.  lol.  I hyphenated on our marriage license, but realized after the fact that it looked funny.  I wanted to move my last name to my middle name (and have 2 middle names).  When I called the Hawaii marriage dept (whatever they're called), they said I need a court order in CA to change it on my marriage cert.  Which means, like u said, publishing it in the newspaper for 4 weeks!  Maybe you should check with the social security office & DMV and see if they will let you change all of ur name (since u just got married) and bypass the court order.  Good luck!
