Cupcake Wedding Cake

FI and I decided that we want to go with a cupcake wedding cake for our reception. We are still deciding if we are going with Hokulani Bake Shop or Cake Works at this point. We are having 50-60 guests...how many cupcakes do you think we should order? I have read so many times that there is always leftover cake so I wonder if it will be the same with cupcakes. Any advice ladies?? Thanks.

I've heard great things about both places! Hard choice :) I did cupcakes for a friend's wedding recently and made a small cake for the bride and groom. They were having 150 guests and wanted 200 cupcakes. I'd say that there were a lot leftover because most people didn't want to eat 2 since they were so rich. I would say maybe get 75-80? So enough to cover everyone and then some for just in case :)

Mmm. Cupcakes.... My friend had these at her wedding in June and they ran out! Too many people grabbed seconds before some of us could get firsts. =(

I love that idea...I really wanted to have a cupcake wedding cake as well, but FI said he is putting his foot down on tradition and wants the big cake. We compromised and I can have my cupcakes for the AHR! I don't know anything about either company, but I would probably order 75-85. That way you have some extra and any leftovers, you can take home!

hi hi hi =) we used cupcake couture in aina haina... yummmmm... we got the mini-cupcakes. we had cupcakes left over. BUT the hotel didn't give them back to us =( knottie karchk had cupcake couture cupcakes too for the wedding and they used the extra cupcakes at their day after bbq.... i still crave those cupcakes almost a year later... yuuuummmmm.... depending on your other food, i would order like 40 or so. we had 130 folks, but ordered 100 minicupcakes. we had tons left over. but we had a huge buffet with dessert buffet included =)

I would say at least one for each guest so maybe 80?  But I must say that I have a sweet tooth and if no one were there to stop me, I would probably eat 3 by myself :pIf there are extras, you can always have guests take it home :) Taking cupcakes home is easier than taking cake home

I love cupcakes!  We had cupcakes at our wedding reception and a one-tier cake for the cake cutting ceremony.  We had a bunch of leftover cupcakes, but we also had waaaay too many appetizers during cocktail hour.  So everyone was full by the time the entrees even came around.   My SIL baked cupcakes for our local reception and I think she made about 200 cupcakes for 250 guests and we also had a ton leftover.  I suggest ordering 48 cupcakes if you're planning to serve a lot of food or 60 if you are serving an average size meal.  We had guests get their own cupcakes instead of having the servers pass it out, so we didn't need one for each guest.  HTH!

Thanks for your advice ladies!! I should have mentioned that we are having a dinner buffet and that includes many cakes and pies such as Mac Nut Cream Pie, Apple Pie, Guava Chiffon, Coconut Chiffon and Chocolate. I myself LOVE sweets and I will probably stuff my face with all the pies, cakes and cupcakes. hahah Kinibruin...I really like the idea of the mini cupcakes...I need to call Cake Couture today and find out more info.

Very helpful post. I was wondering the exact same thing. I am sure I'll dominate any leftover cupcakes that I might have. Yum-O!

We're going with Hokulani Bake Shop for ours. They seem less expensive than some other places and OMG... their cupcakes are delicious!!!! You ought to also keep in mind if your caterer is also providing other deserts. Ours is, so I'll order extra cupcakes but not more than 25% more.
